I feel very guilty. Especially if its a high end retail store (like Saks, Nordstroms etc). I'd die of embarrasment before returning something there.

I recently bought some new perfume, after a friend pressured me into it. It was a $90 Bvlgari Rose set, and the specialist gave me all sorts of little extras and spent SO much time fussing over me.

I can't return it now, I'd feel bad. >_< And the worse part? I don't think I like the scent and will probably never wear it. Hmm... Guess I'll give it to a friend having a birthday. -_-

I don't feel guilty for returning merchandise to stores. I usually still have the receipt and/or tags still on the item. What I do feel guilty about is wasting money, which is hard-earned, on items that are wrong or that we cannot use. Stores have a return policy in place because they do expect people to have to return items for whatever reason. You shouldn't feel guilted into keeping an item that you realize you don't actually want or need. Look at it like this: that $90 bottle of perfume you bought, couldn't you use that money for something you actually do need or want, or give the $90 to a charity or needy family...You have the RIGHT to return (most) items- (some items like underwear for example, of course, you couldn't return)-but don't feel guilty in returning something you have no need of. Try thinking "well, this money can go to a better cause, than a perfume I will never use sitting on a shelf collecting dust...some family can use this money for groceries," etc., or for whatever need you have to use the money for. The people at the returns counter are getting paid money for their job, they shouldn't say or do anything to make you feel bad. Oh, and so I guess I would answer "Never" to your list of choices. I hope that helps. (By the way, figure up how many hours that you have to work to pay for whatever item you are considering returning, that might help you to get it done:)

I rarely return anything to the store and when I do I am always feeling guilty and on the defence. I don't know why, I work in retail and people returning things all the time. And what they don't realize the big companies like Proctor &Gamble etc, don't give money to the stores anymore for damaged goods. So whatever the consumer takes back, has to be written off and thrown in the garbage, There's no more money from the big corporations.
In the end, we are paying for that because the stores cannot afford throwing things out, they have to get it back somehow and raising the prices. Maybe that's why I feel guilty, but then again I only take clothes back, that I didn't try on and are too small.
Shampoo and any other stuff I just throw out myself.
I just read Agent Smiles answer and I have to laugh, because it happens that something is stocked over the wrong label, but then you have also customers who tell you it was by that label and the whole line on the shelf is the proper product but hers was maybe in front of it, that's not the stores fault, thats the stupid customers fault who change their minds and just drop it back into the shelf. It's like seeing an $90 toothbrush sitting in a shelf and the label says Dove Soap 454 gr, $ 2.49 and they want the toothbrush for that price. That's when I tell them to get lost.
That's not something that was merchandized by the store.
Well valcan read my answer, the companies don't give a sh.t they don't even know that you returned the items. And like I said in the end you're paying for what you returned anyway.

I dont feel guilty when I return something. I rarely do return things though. Only if it is the wrong size, defective or broken.
I think the only ppl who should feel guilty about returning things are ppl who for example buy a dress, wear it to a function and then return it afterward, Or if they purchase a CD, game, etc..burn it and return it as defective ( happens ALOT) ....
I work in retail and alot of the returns are just repackaged and replaced on the shelf. Some are sold at discount prices due to peices missing.. simple part broken.. etc.. Major defects are written off and sent back to the manufacturers for refurbishing, or simply destroyed.
People who shoplift and then return the items bother me .. where I work we are on like an honour system. We give store credit for returns without a bill of sale. Alot of ppl try to take advantage of this. Its sad, THEY should feel gulity. Not the person who bought the wrong size dress... that happens.

I sometimes return stuff, & I try to distract the sales person so that they don't focus on the return.
Bottom line is -it's really their job to help you.
If everything is valid; you have the reciept, it hasn't been washed, tags are still on, or it's still in it's package, it's within the valid return dates. They have to provide you with customer service.
I've come accross some nasty attitudes even when I was within their guidelines,(but the customer is always right)...
:)
Never feel guilty. It's your money,(what if you forgot that you had to pay for something else, but forgot to, & you really needed the money for something else more important?)
I try to return merchandise the same day or week that I bought it so it's less of a hastle.
Some CDs or software can't be returned once it's opened.
Again, if you are right & the returns person doesn't want to help you, calmly ask to speak to the manager.

I return things sometimes. I never had a problem except once at Linens N Things when I returned some curtains. I had also bought the hardware to hang them up (the whole thing just didn't work), and in line, the man in back of me, and the girl at the register, were so completely rude that I was "holding people up" by returning so many items at once, I was really embarrassed. So, until other people acted rudely, no, I wasn't feeling guilty!

No I don't feel guilty at all. I sometimes have to return merchandise but, the stores I shop at have a good return policy.

I frequently return items to stores & I don't feel guilty. I'm famous
for changing my mind. I buy things on a whim & decide later I
don't want it or need it. Most of the time, the item is defective.
Why would I feel guilty for returning something? Regardless,
I have that right. Or they should change their whole policy.

No I never feel guilty about that. The only times I return things is if the item is broke, the wrong type or a clothing gift is the wrong size.

Never, because I only return things for legitimate reasons. I also return things that fall apart or do not perform the way they claim they will. I know people who return things unfairly and it is a rip off for the merchants and for us (it forces prices to go up because that's a form of dishonest gain). Sadly though, these people do not have a conscience. How often do I return things? Well I'd like to say never, unfortunately I'd have to say sometimes to frequently.
