The current U.S. military is not only the most powerful ever, it is not even a close comparison.

The British army was not better than that of Prussia, or Napoleon. The British navy controlled the seas but it was contested frequently by the French and Spanish.

The Roman Empire's army was no more powerful than the Parthian Empire's and often lost to it in battle. They were able to defeat the Germans but also lost to them on occassion.

No country in the world can field an army that could challenge the U.S. in battle. Those that have equivalent technology lack the numbers, and those with the numbers lack the training and technology. There simply is no military threat to the U.S.

And the U.S. not only control the seas, they have absolute domination of the seas. The assembled navies of the entire rest of the world would not be a match for one of our carrier groups.

I would have to say the combined Greek and Macedonian army under Alexander the Great.... He conquered more square miles than anybody ever, including Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun.

In modern warfare the current US military is indeed the most powerful ever, but that power derives from our superior missile/bomb technology, GPS satellites, Air superiority fighter jets with AM RAM missiles you can fire and forget from ten miles away, etc, etc. Back in Alexander's day you had to be fierce and cunning and willing to bathe in the blood of your enemies.... by comparison modern warfare seems a bit too impersonal IMHO>

the Germans in WWII, they had produced the first jet powered aircraft while the US were still using propeller planes, they brought down countless countries in Europe and were well on the way to develop the first nuclear bomb before the US started of thinking about it, thank god that they lost interest in the atomic bomb and they double crossed Russia because they had the most powerful army in the world back then. It took Russia, The UK and the US to defeat Germany now that's astonishing

its a little difficult to answer this, becuase its like apples and oranges. Every era has a dominant powerhouse, and that army is less powerful than even the least powerful army of a subsequent era, becuase of things like technology, medical advances, tactics, etc. For instance, Rome was the unrivaled military power during it's time. The US Army is our generations Roman Army (historians expound on this endlessly). It is the unrivaled power of the modern era (i.e., the "post-nuclear" era). In terms os sheer wealth, even in relatavistic terms, there has never been a country like the United States. Likewise for every other category you can name, including the military, I believe.

Probably the first one to authorize and have the guts to push the red button. The one to launch a nuclear attack on another country.
I'd really like to say the US, but something keeps me from actually saying that. I think because I feel our military is growing war weary. That and we are being spread too thinly over an ever-growing range.

Germanies ww2 wehrmacht. They brought Europe to its knees, they were 20 years ahead of the competition when it came to technology. All of us living in the free world are damn lucky for the selfish pride that brought about the downfall of the 3rd reich.
