Becuase even as a secretary or receptionist, you are working with the patients, the patient files, and touching many aspects of the "business".
As in any industry, in order to work in it, you have to understand it to some level.
Good luck!

It is important so you can tell this person whether they should go to the emergency room; if you need to alert the doctor there is an urgent problem with one of his patients; if you know a certain appointment for a particular condition will take 15 minutes or take 2 hours.
It also reduces the potiential for your doctor to malpractice based on poor information or knowledge relayed by staff.
The doctor is liable for all of your actions - if you cannot evaluate the person, paperwork, he could be sued because of your lack of knowledge - it's not a defense.

It is important because whatever your position having a good knowledge of the vocabulary used in that particular field is helpful when answering questions, filling out paperwork, refering patients questions to the doctor. You should always have or develop the knowledge needed to do the job professionally.

If someone calls in with a problem and needs to speak to the doctor, a secretary needs to be able to determine how serious it is, and if she needs to interrupt them. Also considering she is working in a medical area, she should have some knowledge of what she is doing. (Or he)

I guess because most of the time when you call to get an appointment the receptionist always asks what's wrong with you & they need to know how serious it is so they will know how soon they need to get you in to see the doctor.

It would come in handy if someone while visiting the office were to experience a myocardio infarction which causes them to fall and strike their mandibular cranium against the corner of your desk leaving a bilateral laceration in the inferior nasal area eventually leading to decreased LOC and a bad case of hypovolemic shock and your boss asks you to write a report about it.

Because you have to deal with the doctors and the patients on a regular basis and it's nice to look like you belong there.
