They could have developed technophobia like many people in this generation have developed. Taht way we would still be running around naked in the forest like the other primates, getting eaten by predators and dieing of starvation or disease. But at least there would be more trees to hug.

Interesting question. I guess the real question is 'What could you live without today?' Cars, electronics, power, plastics ... all are part of processes that produce pollution. I'm sure we are doing things today that will affect the planet for the next generation. For example, what is the impact of nanotechnology on our planet? The processes used to produce these parts are vast, but is there something inherent in silicon-based and carbon nanotube technology that is detrimental to the planet? How can we know this? But does this mean we should stop with trying to progress? Past generations have done us many favors with the technologies they developed.

well, if many of them had killed themselves, or not had children, there would have been more naturalness around (because of less people) for some people in my generation to enjoy
however, many of us, perhaps me, would not be here to enjoy it, so that seems pretty pointless
