Or do you have to pay for another ticket?

That depends upon the fare you paid. If you are flying on a full price ticket they'll just get you on the next available flight. There won't be any additional charges.

If you are flying on a deep discount fare, you are usually out of luck. Failing to show for your flight cancels your reservation without a refund. At least that's what the fine print says. If you ask nicely, most ticket agents will rebook you on the next available flight but you will have to pay any difference in price as well as a $50 - $100 change fee.

If you have to drive a distance to the airport -- my normal departure airports are 75 - 100 miles from home -- you might get away with saying that traffic was backed up due to an accident and that's why you were late. I've played that card several times and was rebooked with no additional charge. From personal experience, NEVER say that you overslept though! That never works!

Passengers who hold confirmed bookings but do not turn up for the flight are called "No Show". Each Airline has its own rules governing such "No Show" Passengers. Most of the Airlines are quite flexible in accommodating the No Show Passengers on the next available flight subject to the type of ticket the passenger is holding. Normally, a penalty is levied on discounted tickets which again varies from Airline to Airline.

This happen to me years ago in Chicago, IL at O'Hara International Airport. If you miss your flight, all you have to do is to reschedule your flight on the next flight if they have a seat available, if not, you might have to wait until the next morning. But you won't have to pay for another ticket. The ticket attendant at the desk is very helpful. Just be very patient.
