The trick is, you can't "diet". A diet in our society is basically a drastic change to your eating habits that cause a rapid loss of weight, but along with that, you get the infamous yo-yo dieting (I still can't figure out why Kirstie Alley is the spokesperson for Jenny Craig, because she's a prime example of yo-yo dieting).
The best way to stick with something is to make lifestyle changes. Find ways that fit within your lifestyle making slight alterations to your habits, patterns etc. Find small sacrifices and small pleasures. Replace one glass of pop everyday with water. If you're hungry before bed, drink a glass of low fat (or fat free) milk instead of munching. Find an excercise that may not require going to the gym and is easy to pick up on if you have a "bad spurt" where you can't seem to force yourself to do the activity for a week or two... mine is walking. I can pick it up at any time, and one 30 minute brisk walk makes me feel on top of my game.
The key is everything in moderation, lifestyle changes you can be happy with forever, and make you proud everytime you follow through with them, even if its two years after you started "dieting".
I was not overweight per say, but I was definitely on the high end of normal at 19. Over the course of the next two years, I lost 50 pounds... a little bit at a time. Every time I made a lifestyle change, another five pounds would come off, and then I'd stabilize again, and because of the fact that the changes were things I could stick with forever, I've kept it off and the changes still stick with me.
I'm just a healthier person in general - and a very happy and satisfied person as well.
Good luck!

Try clipping photos out of magazines of people who's bodies you wish to look like. Be reasonable and choose people you have a good chance of being built like. Either scrap book or post the pictures on a wall where you workout. Put together some tapes of songs that are sort of fast beat that you like to listen to while you work out. Somewhere on the wall post a picture of a guy you like or the people you would want praise from for all your effort. Only buy the food you wish to eat while on your diet. Should you ever have a craving for something else at least you'll have to get up and go somewhere to get it. Eat slow. It only takes 20 minutes for your brain to realize you are full, if you eat too fast you will end up eating far more than what you need. Do eat at night and if you do make sure it is low carb or you'll set yourself up to eating all night. For some people it helps to buy an outfit you really want to be able to wear once you loose weight. Most of all, be happy! If you beat yourself up all the time it will make diet rule and exercise a punishment instead of a positive experience.

You can't make a diet for a few months and go back to the way you ate before. As Jenny E said, it's a change in lifestyle. Don't look at pics of models or other people. You have to do this for yourself, take care of yourself, only eat what is healthy for your body. It is hard to give up eating french fries and Jumbo Jacks, but you have to do it if you want to feel better and have a better lifestyle.
One more thing: BE VERY PATIENT, don't expect to lose 10 pounds in a week, it all takes time. As you diet and exercise you will feel more confident and better.
DON'T STOP EATING AND EXERCISE AT THE SAME TIME, make sure you eat lots of veggies and exercise at the same time. You will only get cranky, in a bad mood, frustrated, if you don't eat enough.
IT IS HARD, BUT DON'T WORRY, YOUR BODY WILL GET USED TO IT. KEEP TRYING, BE PATIENT. YOU WILL SEE THAT PEOPLE WILL START NOTICING HOW GOOD YOU'RE LOOKING. THIS WILL ALSO BE A MOTIVATION FOR YOU TO CONTINUE WITH YOUR NEW LIFESTYLE.
GOOD LUCK!!!

WELL, being on a diet is the worse thing ever. You have to keep forcing yourself not to eat things that you want to. To me, i eat rite and excercise very often so i dont have to be on diet and still eat the food i wanna eat.
My friend is on a diet, what i always tell her is to ask herself everyday why she is doing this because at someone point she will forget why she's on the diet. So, asking that question as a reminder. Also, set a goal on how much want to to lose weight and stuff.
