That is why there are so many kids that are out of control, because parents now a days don't discipline.
Me personally, I think around 6 years old is a good cut off point. After that I would send them to there room or make them sit on the couch. Take away TV for a couple of weeks along with maybe the radio or some other thing they really enjoy.
I think up until that age, a spanking is a good way to discipline.
That's just me though. My mom spanked us kids until we were around 10 years old.

I was pretty young when 'threatening' was all that my parents did. I had a cousin that was spanked until he was 15. A lot of people are not spanking their children because of the child welfare system taking such an over the top stance on how wrong it is. For me, there is nothing wrong with physically disciplining a child. There is no excuse for beating a child but a swat on the behind only stings for a minute - but the child remembers it a lot longer than anything else.

I was slapped in the face till I was 15. I think no age is okay. I was smacked this is why I don't do it to my child - I've found that children that are spanked are far more violent with other children their age. But I guess they're taught by parents that if something doesn't go your way, just wallop someone to release your own anger. There are other ways to encourage good behaviour in a child rather than using violence against them.

It's called cruetly against the children. They have rights as well. You can spank on occassion and if the situation warrants, but no going overboard like it was when you and i were kids.

Spanking is a great way to teach children how to lash out in anger.
I've raised two amazingly well behaved boys without ever raising a hand to them... come to think of it, I've rarely even had to raise my voice :)
Structure, consistency, honesty and modelling the behaviour you want your kids to emulate works much better than spanking.
When someone tells me it's impossible to raise a child without spankings, I ask them to remember how they felt if they were spanked. For most people, there was a lot of anger and hatred that went along with a spanking. My mom was a hitter and my dad never once raised a hand to us... all of us had more respect for my dad and we were much better behaved for him.
