it really depends on how much rainfall there is up to that time. I grew up in Vermont and am from New Jersey and now reside in Florida, which has nothing to do with anything. Pay attention to the weather for the region you want to tour.. more rain = more wind = less leaves or leaves past peak. The New York Times may have a 'foliage' section near the weather or weekend section which would be a fairly reliable tool to use, also call the chamber of commerce of the town(s) you plan to visit, they should be able to assist you also since they want you to visit and spend in their towns. Peak is earlier Oct usually...the 20th should be okay if they don't get a lot of rain in late Sept or early Oct...the weather channel has a link for peak leaf peepers.
