OK, so my husbands in Iraq and I want to make a video of my son and me (mostly my son) to send to him. My son is almost 3 months old, so hes not too animated yet. I need some ideas of what I could shoot that would be cute.

Last time he seen him was when he was born..

Just send him the daily routine. Feeding, changing, washing, reading a story to baby. All the 'good' stuff he's missing.

Send him my regards and wishes that he returns safely.

My wife has her masters degree in "Mixed Media". I asked her opinion and she gave me some general rules & ideas for filming anything.

1. Try to always use a tripod or steady your hand against a sturdy surface.( No-one wants to watch a "shaky" video; makes them sick!)

2. Try NOT to always be "zooming" in and out on your subject.

3. Try to "linger" on your subject for NO-longer than 2-3 minutes at a time. (Unless you are filming something VERY "visual", "lingering" on your subject, without changing the camera angle, will "bore the pants off" your audience. Although, in this case, I'm sure your hubby will be GLUED to the screen even if you guys were being recorded whilst you slept!!)

There are many ways to make a "cute" family film.

Draw "word-bubbles", (like in cartoon strips) , on white pieces of paper saying things like,"I love you daddy", "Daddy come and save me from Mama, She only let's me eat MILK!", ETC.

Have a baby fashion show.

Do a "Baby-day-out" movie, documenting your average day.Include the most mundane stuff & make sure you play "familiar" music as the "movie" progresses.

As you say, your situation is tough, because, at 3 months old, your child isn't animated. Thats all I can think of!

Good Luck!!! And I will pray your hubby gets home safe!

you should video every single thing you can. it may seem silly to you, but just a simple bath would mean the world to your husband, he is missing all of this. film everything and film often.
1. film bathtime
2. when you get pictures takes at sears or walmart, film that so he can "be there" with you to appreciate the pic more.
3. film his family holding the baby and saying how much the baby reminds them of your husband and why.
4. make a small documentary of waking in the middle of the night to feed him and what happens such as he wakes you up and eats for 5 min and then falls asleep and then you are awake for the rest of the night, etc.
if your husband is in the army , navy, etc. look on ebay (or wherever else) and see if you can find infant military outfits. go to walmart portrait studio and get a pic of the baby with the united states flag background they have. i don't know anyone else in the military but it's my understanding that the soldiers keep a pic of their loved ones pinned in their hats to boost morale that YOU are the reason he's there. to keep YOU safe. get a pic of you and your son in military apparel and on the back of the small photo write something like "we love you and pray everyday for your safe return. all my love, brenda sue and (then put his son's foot print on the back of the photo). that way it will be signed by you both. remember, if you let your son sleep with you since your husband is away it will be traumatic for you all if yo oust him when your husband comes home. so take into consideration all you do because one day he will have to share yo with dad. and you don't want it to be anymore traumatic than necessary for anyone.
don't forget, what your husband can't see, he doens't know. you can tell him you bathe "little johnny" everynight at 5pm but he won't be able to appreciate it if he can't see it for himself. he will appreciate every video you send no matter how little everyday life is. oh, i think it would make a better video if you were in it too. like for instance if he cries, what he needs to stop crying such as getting his back rubbed or rubbing his cheek. you know, brenda sue, the little mommy insider things! god bless.

That's a precious idea for your hubby. I would suggest taking short clips of everyday activeties, you and your son together. That way the video isn't dependant so much on his lack of animation.^^ Make it kinda like a mini documentary. You can add music, cut and edit clips, whatever...just like a tv show. There's lots of software to do that with if your camera's digital. Good luck.

Video record your son doing lots of different things around the house....playing, eating, watching something, discovering, "talking", ....and then get someone (not yourself) to do a voice in the background so it kind of matches what your son is doing...kind of like so he is talking to his daddy in iraq...be creative in what he says...like maybe a "daily routine" kind of thing..and you can have it so it is like he is having a conversation with his daddy! then at the end he can say how much he loves his daddy and that he misses him and can't wait to see him...of course add yourself in it!!....oh and don't forget to get a clip of him when he is sleeping...priceless!! good luck!!

you could take some shots of him sleeping, and some shots of him just sitting and smiling. you could give him a little toy, and just film him while he is playing with it
