Sorry to hear about you or your loved one. This information is available from several cancer web sites. I know because I had to look up stage 3 breast cancer a few months back.

They can't give him chemo because of a broken leg? Tough break and sorry to hear that SpaceMonkey. This sounds like one of those horrible email forwards where the 7 year old not only has lung cancer but also has a tumor from being beaten on the head and yet the little girl has time to send out emails begging for money so the doctors can heal her, and yet the doctors don't care enough that someone in her family beats her.

Hi actually no one knows exactly it depends on several factors 1. treatment , patient condition, responses to treatment if you continue to smoke or are exposed to it it decreases exponentially there are new treatments available constantly being developed with much promise also age is a big factor as well as state of mind personally I have heard of some extremely good results comming out of other counties the best result i have heard of was complete remission using a relatively new treatment what it does is to raise the intracellular glutathione level and couple that with a major diet and lifestyle change and you could extend your chances remarkably according to the top oncologist on the planet hope all goes well Gorbalizeer

Only GOD knows when its time.....Noone else can possibly know how much time someone has. You have to be prepared as best as you can for the fight of your life......literally! It partly depends on treatment you are given. My husband was diagnosed with 'non-small cell'lung cancer, stage 4, August 12, 2003. I asked in early Oct. how much time he may have left. The doc said "maybe 4-6months, hard to say". I thought "OK, at least the kids and I will have one more Christmas and he may have one more birthday(its Feb,17th)."
Well guess what? It started to spread to the base of his brain and my husband said" I will not let it get to my brain!!" He opted for radiation to that area. We were told it will "make you or break you". he said "whatever it takes for me to beat this". He was an incredible fighter! Unbeleivably stubborn to not ever give up, a definate will to live! He died on Nov.22,2003, 4 days after his last radiation, 3 days after our 15th anniversary. His service was day before Thanksgiving,2 days before his brothers birthday. TIMING SUCKS!!
So much for 4-6 months! My husbands theory in the end was "I guess God has another plan for me......I'm so sorry this is happening".

The fact is .. we don't tell our patients how long they have to live because there is only one entity that knows... and that is the powers that be.......
I've seen patients live over a year with stage 4 lung cancer....
If the patients really push me to tell them the average life span, I will, but I usually tell them that they may be hit by a bus tomorrow, and I don't know how long that they have.
Usually it is considered terminal enough to call in hospice, and hospice usually initiates once someone has about 6 months left to live.

IF U R STILL HOLDING ON TO THE CIGARETTE IN THE PICTURE I WOULD SAY NOT LONG AT ALL. IF YOU QUIT SMOKING A FEW MONTHS AGO OR LONGER,DEPENDING ON WHERE THE CANCER IS IN YOUR LUNGS.SOME HAVE LOWER PART OF LUNG REMOVED.NO SURGERY BUT CHEMO AND RADIATION DO WELL TO PUT IN REMISSION. GAVE MY MOTHER 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS DEPENDING ON WHETHER SHE CHOSE TXMENT OR NOT. DID TREATMENT AND SHE LIVED FROM 1997 TO OCT 2003. THAT IS MORE GREATGRAND CHILDREN.SOMETHING TO LOOK FOWARD TO,ATTITUDE AND MANY THINGS MAKE A DIFFERENCE. MUCINEX TABLETS 2 TWICE DAILY WILL KEEP THE FLEM IN LUNGS THINNED DOWN SO FEWER LUNG INFECTIONS AND MORE ROOM TO BREATHE WITHOUT CHOKING.VIT.E HUGE ANTIOXIDANT 1000IUDAILY. B-COMPLEX,MULTIPLE VIT. TREAT ALL LUNG INFECTIONS TIL GONE.DONT LET DR. TELL U U DO NOT NEED AN ANTIBIOTIC IF U CAN TELL U DO!!!! SOMETIMES THEY ARE NOT LISTENING. THIS WILL KEEP U OUT OF HOSPITAL MORE. READ HOSPICE CONTRACT, MOST HAVE 6 MONTHS WITH MEDICARE TO PAY AND THATS ALL,LIKE A DEATH SENTENCE. DO NOT LIKE HOSPICE AT ALL. NO SERVICE. NO SITTERS LIST. ONLY DRUGS OUR DOCTOR COULD PROVIDE. WE AS FAMILY TOOK CARE OF OUR LOVE ONE. HOPE U HAVE FAMILY WILLING TO GIVE THERE ALL. GOOD LIKE AND GOD BE WITH U.

Only your doctor can answer this with any accuracy. It is totally dependent on the patient and the course the disease has taken. My father was diagnosed with end stage cancer and passed away within a month of the diagnosis.

that is definately a case by case diagnoses, some patients will extend their stage 4 life with the help of treatments if they are affective on the cancer and some cancer never slows down it just depends..my father died within 10 weeks of his initial diagnosis and my stepfather died 5years later...my father in law is currently in stage 4 for over a year now....

Honestly, no one can answer that question with any accuracy. I worked at a Cancer Center for 7 years and the doctors made "educated guesses" based on other patient results on similar therapy.
