How is Parvo transmitted?

Canine parvovirus is carried by dogs. Adult dogs may be infected carriers without showing any clinical signs. Dogs with the typical diarrhea that parvovirus causes shed the virus as well. It can last a long time in the environment, perhaps as long as 9 months or longer.

Generally, it takes 7-10 days from the time of exposure for dogs and puppies to start showing symptoms and to test positive for parvo.

Parvo is highly contagious to unprotected dogs, and the virus can remain infectious in ground contaminated with fecal material for five months or more if conditions are favorable. Extremely hardy, most disinfectants cannot kill the virus, however chlorine bleach is the most effective and inexpensive agent that works, and is commonly used by veterinarians.

The ease with which infection with Parvo can occur in any unvaccinated dog must be stressed. The virus is extremely hardy in the environment. Withstanding wide temperature fluctuations and most cleaning agents. Parvo can be brought home to your dog on shoes, hands and even car tires. It can live for many months outside the animal. Any areas that are thought to be contaminated with parvo should be thoroughly washed with chlorine bleach diluted 1 ounce per quart of water.

Dogs and puppies can contract parvo even if they never leave their yards. Parvo virus, despite what you might hear, is NOT an airborne virus. It is excreted in the feces of infected dogs, and if someone -- human, dog, bird, etc. -- steps in (or otherwise comes in contact with) the excrement, the possibility for contamination is great. Some people speculate that birds invading a dog's food dish can deposit the parvovirus there. If you think you may have come in contact with parvovirus, a strong solution of bleach and water does kill the virus, so you can wash your shoes and clothes, even your hands with it, to reduce the risk of infecting your dog.

Rest assured that parvovirus is specific to dogs alone and cannot be transmitted to humans or other pets of a different species, such as cats.

YES. Parvo is so contagious, but the older the dog gets, the less likely he/she is to get parvo. It is usually puppies and dogs with compromised immune systems that get it, plus your dog should be vaccinated against it, it is a vaccine that is given three times as a puppy and once a year after that. Watch out for drastic changes in your dog, like sudden personality differences, lethargy, vomitting, runny stool. Parvo is a huge deal and most dogs don't survive, and if you do want to treat a dog with it it can be very expensive. Make sur eyour dog is up to date on his/her vaccines and try to keep your dog away from the neighbor dog and yard. Hope it works out for you. Call your vet if you have questions, they will be glad to give you more details.

You had better believe it.. I hope your dog is vaccinated against parvo... and if not.. do so immediately but in the meantime, you must find some way to keep the dog away from the outside fence between the two yards... Parvo is a very very very bad disease for our pet dogs.. It is a cruel disease and there is no excuse for it if people would just vaccinate

once you've been contained in the backyard next door, or someone from there has been on your backyard, the virus could be tracked in, because it really is likewise spread through feces. The most secure element to do is to grant the recent dogs a shot for Parvo, even with the undeniable fact that older dogs frequently have some immunity besides.

Yes, if your dog goes into the yard next door or if the other dog comes into your yard. Also, if the other dog poops very close to the fence where some of it comes onto your property, then it can get parvo if it goes onto the same place. Has your dog had its shots? If it has had all its shots, it should be safe.

First you have to ask yourself did you dog get the parvo vaccination? Then you have to look at how old or young your dog is? Puppies and old dogs that are weak can get it very easily and even if it got the vaccination it could still get it. They can ask there vet how to sterilize there yard so that other animals don't get it and become carriers of that horrible disease.

Yes, he can! Parvo is extremely contagious. If you have a vet, I suggest that you call him/her and tell the vet that your neighbor's dog has parvo and to see what is recommended. If you have don't have a vet, then GET ONE IMMEDIATELY! I am very hopeful that your dog has had its shots... if not, PLEASE GET THEM! Your dog will have to be tested...
