I have to recognize as a Spanish speaking person that Spanish is a very difficult language, but U can learn it if u put interest in it. I recommend that u watch to Spanish speaking programs, listen to music in Spanish and buy a good dictionary English to Spanish and start reading it. I had never been in the states before and I think my English is pretty good, I learned it just watching cable TV (in English) with close captions and every word that I don't understood I looked the meaning in the dictionary!!! U can also look for lessons over the Internet. And If u want I can help u over the messenger! Good Luck!!

All of the things that have been mentioned are good.
I once had 2 girls who used Spanish all of the time to speak so that others would not understand them. They loved it and others were amazed. Is there a friend who has the same interest?
Music is a great way to learn. Try buying a CD by a Spanish singing artist. Another option is to go to www.teachersdiscovery.com. There you will find instructional CD's. Sing, Dance, Laugh and Eat Tacos is pretty good. It was the words too so if a word is not clear you can look at it.

In your case I definitely recommend thinking in Spanish even if it is for just 20 minutes a day.
That way you are not losing what you already know and moreover words that you don´t know while thinking encourages you to look it up in the dictionary and you will remember the new word easier as you applied in in your thoughts. That´s what helped me learning English.
Reading any spanish text also helps because during the time you read you are actually thinking in Spanish in order to follow the text.
I try to read at least 30 minutes of any English text so I don´t lose it as I am not living in an english speaking country. At the same time reading builds my vocabulary.

I took Spanish in school. To be very proficient in Spanish or any language for that matter, one has to practice and speak it frequently. Even if your friends don't speak good Spanish as you phrase it, you should still encourage them to communicate with you using that language. Remember conversational Spanish is different than the formal one; esp. when it comes to grammar, pronouns, etc. The Spanish spoken by the Mexicans and the Puerto Ricans are certainly different than the real Spanish spoken in Spain. But hey, Spanish is Spanish. Be it Spanglish is better than none. Carry with you at all times a little manual in conversational Spanish. and translations . Spanish is hard to learn versus English, as it has a lot of properties. For ex you say, el hombre and la mujer In English, all you have to say is the woman or the man. You don't have to distinguish if it's a masculine or feminine word.
There's a site to learn Spanish as well as diff languages which you might find helpful.
Go here and type in the sentence and it will translate it for you:

Spend a couple of weeks in mexico city because the spanish thaught here is completely different from the spanish spoken in mexico. I remember i took my white friend to durango and he spoke sort of good spanish but not the mexican spanish (with lots of cusswords and words that don't exist), long story short my family thought he was gay because he spoke "nice spanish"

These days you can learn how to speak Spanish over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Spanish online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/spanish The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Spanish in just 3 months.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Spanish language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.
