I think it depends on the cat's appearance and temperment. We named our male Blaze because he's orange and really loved catnip when we got him (he was a stoner, hehehe). Our new female is a dilute calico....she's very colorful, demure, and petite....fragile looking....so Lotus just fit.

I had two cats when I was a kid. The female was black and white and I named her Bootsie after a friend's cat (all four paws were white). My dad actually stumbled upon the name for my male. He had quite a little trouble-maker personality....my dad said he was a buster...so he was dubbed Buster:)

In general, I like unique names. Fluffy, mittens, boots....those just don't cut it for me. I don't like names that are too long, either. I considered Magnolia for Lotus, but it's just too many syllables, lol.

If I ever get a siamese, I like Suki and Mai-Ling....although, Mai-Ling was the name of my friend's old siamese, so I don't know if I'd steal that one.

Pick a tv or movie or comic book character.
Or pick a trait of the cat (Socks for colored paws, etc)
How about a silly name like Shmoopsy? I'm thinking of the cute little cat from the comic strip Mutts.....I adore his view of the world!

I really don't like cats but if I had one, I'd name it either:

1. Jinx
2. Oscar (brothers old cat)
3. Garfield
4. Chino

I've only had one cat in my life, his name was the best: Chino Axl Sniffer House. Chino is the raddest name for a cat.

A fun thing to do is pick a name you like and then look it up in another language.

For example: when we got our first cat my husband wanted to name her "Bug". We live in Japan so I looked up "bug" in Japanese and it translates to "Mushi" (litearlly means insect). So, we named our cat Mushi.

My cat has four white feet, the rest of her is black, so I named her Boots.
