You don't have to go to a four year college to become a hair stylist. You can attend cosmetology school which is probably 6 to nine months depending on the program.

Its so easy it ain't funny!
In order to work as a hairstylist or cosmetologist, one must be licensed by the state in which you want to work. In order to become licensed one must have graduated from a state-licensed barber or cosmetology school and be at least 16 years old. Some states require graduation from high school while others require as little as an eighth grade education.
Cometology courses can range from 6-8 months long depending on the speed of the program in your area.
