I have noticed small black ants on my countertop. I don't want to use any poisons because I have cats. I know there are some natural remedies -- does anyone have any solutions?

I have cats as well as dogs, and we always use an herbal ant spray that is mainly composed of peppermint oil. It is free of toxins and safe for use around the animals. And it smells good :) I forget the brand name, but you can get it at just about any hardware store. Pretty much anything with mint in it will repel ants. Oh, and I've heard of sprinkling paprika or lemon juice around your exterior walls, but haven't tried it myself so I can't tell you if that one works or not.

There are a couple of choices. Peppers are one choice and there is a kind of ant trap contining food you set out and they take it back to the colony. The queen ant and the others devour them and their lives are taken for doing that.

I've had some success with chili powder, cayenne pepper, or black pepper sprinkled around doors and windows.

Borax laundry detergent will also do the job. Bugs hate boric acids and borate salts.
