One comment from a vet: everyone so far has been correct, that in most cases, a penny will pass just fine on its own. However, if it DOESN'T pass, the reason you need to see a veterinarian is because some pennies, ie: those older than 1982, contain enough zinc to be toxic. The good news is that it's super-easy to see pennies on x-ray, so if you're not sure if it's still inside your dog or not, one x-ray will tell you for sure. Good luck!

There is no guarantee it will pass. He could possibly throw it up. But if he starts throwing up and the penny isn't found in the barf, take him to the vet immediately. If he doesn't get sick and throw up, you need to follow him around for the next two or three days, and sorry, but you will need to disect his poop to see if he passes the penny. If he doesn't pass it within a few days, you should take him to the vet and have him x-rayed. If the penny continues to stay inside him, it could cause an intestinal obstruction at a later date.

Well some times they don't pass through the dog completely and could very toxic for your dog if it does not pass through completely. So you should either watch its poop for the penny or take it to a vet. If it was me I would take it to the vet because of the fact it could get stuck some were and eventually kill the dog.

It's fine. Just keep a look out for anything wrong with him for a few days, if so a vet may need to take a look at him.
It will pass, because once when I was cleaning up the poo's in the back yard as a kid I found a dime in one. Sounds gross, but it was good to know.

yeah, thats pretty much all you can do. (a penny is really so small, it shouldent be that big of a problem for a dog's digestive system to pass.) if it was a smaller breed of dog, i might be a little worried, but if its a dalmation, you really shouldent be that worried at all.
ha! in 3 days, you'll have your deposit back ma'am! you'll find it on the lawn!!

Are you worried about the dog or the penny? A penny doesn't buy much these days.

Actually, copper is toxic for dogs. However if it's just one penny the dog will likely be fine. Just look for any changes to indicate if something is wrong and contact your vet if you think your dog is not okay.

Don't worry, it'll come out! When one of my niece's was about 3 yrs. old, she swallowed a nickel. We took her to the emergency room and they did an xray. They said to not worry, that she should pass it in a couple of days and just keep an eye on her in the meantime. Well, a few days later she came running out of the bathroom all excited and said to me, "Aunt Janie, come here!" So I followed her to back to the bathroom. She points to her potty chair and says, "Look, I got my nickel back!" It was classic! True story!

Coins don't always pass due to their weight. Watch for it, and if no passing in 3 days, see a vet.
