I will be traveling by air and want to know how to carry a camera. Will the scanners mess up the digital cards, etc. Are they allowed as carryon?

Cameras are indeed allowed as carry-on. As a professional photographer I always carry my cameras with me. As for the digital capture cards, dont worry. The only thing affected by x-ray radiation are film with an iso rating above 800. However, newer x-ray machines will now allow film below 1600 ISO to safely pass through without worries of fogging. However, if you are still skeptical you can always request the people doing the search to do a manual check of your film and equiptment. By the way the ISO safety rating of the X-ray can be seen on the front of the x-ray scanner.

They are allowed as carry-on (I most recently flew on 8/10--, yes, that day). I don't have a memory card, but the pics in the internal memory will be just fine, and I don't see why a memory card should be any different. That's based on the last several trips I've taken. You don't ever want to check your camera, or anything else of value. Always keep that sort of thing in your carry-on.

I fly every week and many people carry cameras. They are most definitely allowed as carry-on, especially since one might be taken out of your checked bag (since you're not allowed to lock them anymore). Tell the security screeners you have a camera and they'll give you a separate container to put it in to go through. I don't think anything would "mess up" the digital cards, but you might want to check with the camera manufacturer or the place you bought it.

I carried mine onboard and didn't have any problems with the memory card.
