Charles D is way wrong in his comparison.
The Confederacy was not a terror group. In fact they just wanted to be left alone to form thier own government to do what they pleased with the current issues of that day. People who make such long excitable comparisons are either pulling your leg or just plain stupid.
The Confederacy was racists, as was most Americia at the time. Abuse of people on account of race didn't start nor stop with the Confederacy. In fact most of the poor treatment happened under the American flag. People who cite the same statements of "racists fools wave the rebel flag" never mention the fact we slaughtered Indians under Old Glory herself. So most people have isolated that flag (confederate flag) as the number one center of evil.
It is used by members of the KKK, but again so is the American flag. Since the Confederate Flag is the easy target we zoom in on that one. It means what you want it to mean, just like any other symbol out there.
The longer a symbol exists, the more meanings are placed upon it. So it doesn't mean that a man who waves the Confederate Flag will hit his wife, or even is a bigot. Niether does it mean that a person who flys the American Flag agrees with the slaughter of Native Americans. We judge though by the fabric and the color of a banner before we ever talk to the person.
This is the most ironic thing because it is those people who are upset by the same lack of compassion. So it will never end, someone hates the flag, another person will raise it.
The Confederate Flag is protected under the rights of Americia, so to each man his own banner of choice.
In the end the most dangerous people hide behind the cleanest symbols.

Jim C obviously studied revisionary History. Slavery was an issue that tore the nation apart, and it was an issue larger than Gay Marriage is, years before 1861. Some of the economic truths are conveniently used to hide the fact that this nation was torn apart by injustice for the black slaves. I reject the rebel flag and what it stands for. I support their right to fly it however, just as the idea of free speech says I should. So what do I think of Confederate Rebels? About the same way as I feel about illegal aliens.

Some of my Great grandparents and kin were rebels (others were Unionists). They did not beat their spouses, so far as I know, and from the courtly graces on that side of the family, I sincerely doubt they would have. What on earth do Southerners who believed the Bill of Rights gave them the authority to succeed from the union have to do with the NAACP or the Black Panthers? For that matter, what does the NAACP have to do with the Black Panthers?

I fly the Battle Flag myself and I am not racist.
The Confederate flag is not a racist symbol. It is a symbol of rebellion. A symbol that the federal government is NOT all-powerful, that the People have rights and have the power to defend those rights against ANY oppressive government, whether that government sits in London, Washington DC, or New York.
As the Declaration of Independence says, "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

My daddy is a true red neck and use to fly his confederate flag under the american flag until I made him take it down. Now when I get back over there it might be back up again.

2. Race did not enter into the Civil War as a factor until 3/4 of the way through the conflict. President Lincoln was extremely worried that he might lose the support of - god forbid - Northern Slave Owners and the political base they represent. Yes, the North did officially as national law endorse slavery until the Presidential Order known as The Emancipation Proclamation on Jan 1, 1863, but the first shot of the Civil War was fired on Jan 10, 1861 when the CSA fired on the USA Ship "Star of the West" that was enforcing the US economic blockade of the CSA (not the battle at Fort Sumter as most Americans are taught). Only when Lincoln had finally solidified his political base and was not in danger of being ousted from office did he make the proclamation TWO YEARS LATER.
3. The principle reason for the Civil War was as it always is in every war - money and power. It was strictly economics and greed. The North had all of the means of production acquired through the Industrial Revolution, had developed a solid infrastructure of rail lines and had most of the gold reserves. They possessed most of the seats of power both political and economic while the South was primarily an agrarian society. When the southern states banded together to attempt to build their infrastructure and find other and more profitable markets for their goods, the North blockaded their ships. The southern states had no choice but to secede from the Union or continue being bullied by the Northern states economic policies. It was the artificially low price of Cotton and other commodities engineered by the North plus the unfair taxes and low representation of the southern states in matters of US Policy that forced much of the southern states into secession - it was not slavery. Yet we don't teach these facts to our children.
4. Slavery became a convenient topic for Abraham Lincoln during the election bid for re-election in 1864. This process began in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation by President Lincoln. Most people do not know that the Democrat candidate for the Presidency, General George McClellan strongly and frequently reprimanded President Lincoln (A Republican) during his campaign stops all along the northern US for freeing the slaves and losing the "cheap labor" they provided. General McClellan also ran on a platform of a cease fire with the CSA (Sound like Democrats during our time eh?) and if he had won the world would be radically different today.
5. The final catalyst was actually a combination of Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation and the terrorist acts of Sherman's "March to the Sea" that killed thousands of southern men, women and children and scorched everything (Homes, hospitals, churches, everything) in their path from Atlanta to Savannah, GA plus other bloody Union atrocities that finally won the election for Lincoln. The USA committed many of these atrocities throughout the "Civil" war. Most of them are barely documented, but the evidence still exists to this day.
We are ONE America - not African-American, Mexican-American, Euro-American or any other hyphenated definition that seeks to divide us. We are ONE country. This issue of Race is a diversionary tactic. Black vs. White vs. Chicano vs. Asian ... serves nothing but to distract us from discovering the truth. The truth that if we are divided we are easier to conquer. We must stand together as ONE.
Read your history, dig deeper, ASK WHY and understand ALL of it, not just what you are spoon-fed by those seeking to control you.

I agree with the rebels in principle because we both fought the standing government to a standstill and we are both still here. True rebels and renegades....we might have been down for a while but we sure aren't out. sho' nuff

ya know, i am a white American female. i don't fly ANY flag except the American flag! (except during college football, i fly the OU flag- BOOMER! SOONER!) i was brought up not knowing race or color, and that's exactly how i am bringing up my kids- as poud Americans, nothing else!!!
