Can't answer your main question (not Catholic), but just wanted to comment...
"Is this distinction between the sexes proof that the Christian religion is the brainchild of chauvinistic men from 2000 years ago."
IMO, yes. It comes from men who don't realize they come from women... It is a shame few cultures ever held women up instead of putting them lower...

The Catholic Church does not teach that men are closer to God because Christ was a man. We have male priests because they are supposed to be "another Christ" among us, and He was male. Jesus gave us the example of choosing men, although he himself definitely was not a sexist and freely associated with and validated women more than most in His day. So, he could have chosen women if he'd wanted us as priests, but he didn't.
I'd say that the male priesthood is a good idea, because He means men for the most part to be leaders. Some would observe that women's personalities and way of life may tend to make them a little more spiritually oriented than many men. But I feel sure that in God's eyes, we men and women are different but equal, just as he made us.

Not just Catholics but all Christians, and they must, because they believe their God is a huge man in the sky, with a son in pampers following him around.
Muhammad was a real man and is historically recognised.
Christianity came out of Mithraism and is a fully male religion.
Muslims are not followers of Muhammad as your question implies but are those who submit to the Will of The Only True God, Allah.
Your Jesus seems to have Christians to worship him while your Mohammed has Muslims and this does seem a bit odd that you are removing Christ form Christianity in your conscious or unconscious bid to make Muhammad and Jesus alike?
You make me wonder about the image of Muhammad among Christians and whether Muslims are responsible of this misunderstanding of Islam and Muhammad and Muslims since they have such a warped concept of Quran.

first of all, god didn't say that men were higher or better than women, just as god didn't say that whites were superior over blacks---all this crap is just so pathetic.
God gave mankind the power to make their own decisions---and men were chauvinists(you got that right), but then think about it that women do bear and raise the children, so somebody had to be in charge, and since men were the food hunters, the providers, the men got in charge.
All that liberalism stuff needs to stay out of this. The bible has been re-written over 200 times and so the bible is, to me, not even holy any longer. It is a book like so many. Maybe a good guide to proper, ethical and moral, as well as clean, living, a guide to spirituality. But no more....

Other than the tradition of a male-only clergy, the Catholic Church teaches that men and women are spiritually equal.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
The Lord Jesus chose men to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.
The Church recognizes herself to be bound by this choice made by the Lord himself. For this reason the ordination of women is not possible.
With love in Christ.

I'm not a muslim or catholic.
This really is a neat question for anybody.
I guess when you look at the Bible, God gives men and women the same. I personally think, that women will have rewards that men don't have. why? There role in life is tougher for them. They are expected to do things in a more humble way that most men could not do. God, gave a "special" compassionate side to a woman for a reason. Afterall, she has to live with a man and keep her sanity, first of all.
I think women will be blessed in a lot of ways men are not.
There is no "favortism", but women have a more critical role and will be rewarded for it.

You hate your perception of the Catholic Faith, not the true Faith of Roman Catholicism.
Jesus was born a male child. Yet, he was born of a human women. Mary was submissive in her belief that she bore the Messiah of her nation and faith. The human blood that ran through the veins of Jesus for our salvation would be of Mary's lineage. Her DNA would be joined to the Holy Spirit to create the New Adam. Jesus. Not really of position of disrespect for a young poor peasant girl! Mary is called Blessed among women for bearing our Lord. Chauvinistic? Not really. God the Father chose Mary to be the New Ark of the Covenant.
Jesus was self sacrificing for all people in the universe in All time. His role is as High Priest, Sacrificial Lamb, Son of God. Each of these are positions of total servitude. Jesus chauvinistic? I just do not see your position.
Jesus sums up everything to this statement: "Love God, Love your neighbor".
Male and females are equal in creation, BUT not the same. Thank goodness! How boring this would be! The roles are distinct between them, separate gifts.
Before you flush your holy book, try understanding it more openly. Enlighten yourself.
