I have lost 48 pounds over the last year and the last 25 by walking at a brisk pace 5 times a week. I started at 1 mile and have worked up to 3 miles a day. It actually energizes me. I walk first thing in the morning and listen to music on my MP3 player as I go. Walking is easier on your joints and much easier to start out than jogging. Be kind to yourself.....you didn't gain the weight overnight and it isn't going to go away overnight. If you lose too quickly the greater the chance you will gain the weight back so take your time and enjoy. Good luck!

Fast walking is safer on your joints and very effective as an overall body toner. It's not how far you go, but rather how long you go. Take a friend or an upbeat CD. Change where you go ever so often to beat boredom. Make some sensible changes in your diet. Warm up, stretch, then walk. Weigh yourself once a month. Cheat on your diet every 2 weeks to not feel deprived.I believe in you. Don't expect an overnight miracle. Make this a routine for life.I bet you can get down 30 pounds in 3-4 months that will be permanent. My thoughts are with you.

Running dosen't make you lose weight faster than fast walking. According to the research walking brisk raises your heart rate, burns fat, is easier on your knee, leg, and foot joints, better for your back, and you get the same results.
To begin your walking program start out for only about 20-30 minutes, do this daily, and give yourself one day off a week. Take some water with you as you will need it, dress appropriately, not too warm. Remember you are doing this for you. When people see you walking, they'll be wishing they were too!
Limit these foods to just a couple of times a week, this goes hand in hand with your training: cheeses, (change to mozerella or cheeses made with skim milk), sodas (change to diet) sweet treats (change to low fat), fried foods, fast foods.
Do include: fruits, veggies, wheat everything even noodles, chicken, fish, yogurts.
Cut your portions in half especially at night and try to keep yourself busy! Your biggest meals should be breakfast, and lunch as all these things during the day your body will burn off, at night when we sit, this is when we get into trouble. Remember there are many frozen dinners now that are excellent, weight watchers, healthy choice, etc. Use them they're great.
These things are also good for weight loss: dancing, treadmill, stationary bike, tae bo, kickboxing, swimming, remember you will need to work out (walking, etc.) for a minimum of 30 minutes as your body starts to burn fat after 20, before this you're warming up. Make it a fun and exciting thing, yeah!
Excuse if words are misspelled, the spell check did'nt kick in!

Running burns calories faster than walking, but
it takes time to build up your stamina... start slowly
and gradually increase - the key to long-term weight
control is LSD (Long Slow Distance)... I was overweight
for my entire childhood and realized at 25 that my body
was disgusting to look at, and I wondered what it would
look like at 50(?!) so I started running... at 49 I still run,
not as much as in my 20's, and certainly not as fast,
but 3 days per week, 30 - 45 minutes per run, is just
right for maintaining cardiovascular fitness and a trim
body.

Running. First of all, running will release natural pain killers, and kinda makes you go into a good kind of high. Meaning that pain doesn't hurt as bad, everything feels fine, etc.
Second, if you start running, you will be less inclined to stop than if you were walking.
Lastly and most obviously, running uses up more calories, takes more energy.

Give it a try, and increase time and distance after short runs. Most of all, have fun.

Running gets your heart rate up faster and higher than walking, however as I high impact activity, running, especially on pavement, is bad for you feet and worse for your knees. It's also a very difficult ability to devlop and maintain if you don't enjoy it already.

I suggest walking briskly for more distance than you would ordinarily run. See how that feels and if it's easy for you, try running. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes with good support.

Running raises your heart rate better and allows you to burn more calories for the amount of time you do it. I suggest building up your stamina by walking for a few minutes on a treadmill and then running for about 5 minutes. Then walk again for a few minutes and run again. keep repeating the cycle. After a week, reduce the walking time and increase the running time. Keep this pace up and you will be able to run for longer periods of time and burn more calories

People who plan their weekly meals are usually successful at losing weight than those that don’t. Plan your dishes to include healthy carbs such as fairly sweet potato and wholegrain pasta, green vegetables and lean proteins, buy every one of the ingredients in advance and don’t be tempted to enjoy out or order in.

Suck that in. Consciously hold in and contract your abdominals while you’re walking, sitting for your desk or making the meal. This will help to strengthen your abs and your core, and create for you one step closer to a new flatter stomach.

I vote for walking or some other low impact activity. Running will wear out your joints.
