Why??
Because people post on here that their pets have serious medical conditions, or don't give enough information to diagnose.
It may not always be necessary, but isn't it better to be safe than lose your pet?

I agree here. I get a little sick of some of the answers people give here especially when they have no knowledge about what is going on. A lot of people ask questions as there might be others who can give advice if they have had a similar problem. Vets are not perfect and do not know everything. A lot of the breeders see so much more than a vet ever has. I had a pup with PRAA, persistant right fourth aortic arch and was not keeping anything down. The symptoms started at weaning. I called my vet and told him that I wanted a barium x-ray done on this pup. He called me a few hours later and told me he had not seen this in 12 years! It was an easy diagnosis for my vet as I had told him what test I wanted done.
In another case, a woman came to me in tears at 10pm one night. She had been to the vet with her Shepherd and the vet told her that he was severly dysplastic and to put him down! I called that vet and asked what the x-rays looked like on this boy and he told me that he did not even have an x-ray machine! I then asked him if this could be Pano with this young boy and he said NO and hung up. I made an appointment with my vet for this woman the next day for x-rays. This dog had beautiful hips!! He had Pano! The same vet told another person that her dog had Corona. Corona is not usually in our area. The dog had a rotovirus causing him to be sick.
I agree with you!

The real question here is why do people with sick dogs, some with extreme medical emergencies come onto yahoo and ask a bunch of nameless people questions about their animals when those questions should be asked of a vet. Most of the questions are very vague, and even for those of us who have a pretty good knowledge of dogs and their problems, we have no way of knowing what is wrong without more info, and seeing the dog. We cannot make a diagnosis. We are not vets and do not have the medical knowledge to help the pets. We can try to guess what is wrong, but it is just that, a guess. If we give the wrong info to them it could do more harm than good. The first person that should be contacted when you have a sick dog is your vet, or any vet. The majoritty of people who answer questions here are kids/teenagers who do not have a clue!!

As someone who lost a dear friend and companion last week, I say that the advice here to see a vet is sound. YOU know your pet best. If something isn't right, even though it is an obscure or seemingly minor symptom (he wouldn't eat his treat), only a vet can help. No one here could have told me Rooney had cancer, I had no idea Rooney had cancer, and I knew Rooney like I knew myself. Only the vet could tell me he was was full of cancer by taking x-rays.
If anything gets through to you, please listen to people who tell you to go to the vet. Had I not gone, I would be hating myself right now. He was ill from Friday to Sunday, 3 days. So quick. He had been seen 8 months ago by the vet, and got a clear bill of health, BUT we hadn't had the vet biopsy ALL the "fat lumps". When he was ill Friday, I made an appt for Monday morning, but called the Vet Sunday morning because he was acting even more "odd", which some would have thought of no consequence. He died Monday morning.
We can't see your dog, we don't know your dog. Only you and your vet can know whether something isn't right. Everyone who offers advice to "go to the vet" is trying to save you heartbreak. Be grateful for that and get an appt!

I agree 'take it the vet' is an obvious answer but for most problems or questions someone should be able to give you advice or experience they have had. Too many people leave answers under topics they have no knowledge in which is a waste of time.

The reason people say take or ask a vet is because most of the people here do not work in the vet profession. I am not going to diagnosis someone's pet.
I can give in put and advice, if my dogs have had a similar situation, but sometimes people ask about serious issues that need to be addressed by a vet.

well so many of the questions start out something like this..."My cat has not moved, or eaten in days and has a giant piece of glass in it's eyes....what should I do?" This is an exaggeration of course...but not by much. But, I do know what you mean as some people suggest the vet no matter what the problem is..even if it is something totally simple that can be handled at home.

I feel the same way. Unless it's life threatening, I try various things. I check with friends. I research it. I listen, and observe the animal. Then I try whatever I come up with, and if that doesn't work, I try something else. If nothing helps, and I MUST then I take it to the vet. Good for you!

Hey, I WORK AT A VET, and YES, just like a doctor, if you're having a heart attack, diarrhea (for days!!), vomiting, skin allergies, rash, YOU go to the doctor. Or, sorry maybe you've never had one of the above. If the dog, cat, etc is having a problem that you've TRIED to resolve - then YES by all means TAKE IT TO THE VET, IF YOU LOVE THEM - or would you rather them suffer.....LETS NOT GO THERE NOW. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but there is so much animal abuse out there its SICK!

A lot of times people ask some very serious questions about a health problem that their animal is having. Sometimes, just an "answer" isn't enough.

because logically it is the right thing to do. There are not going to be veterinarians answering questions on here. Only people who think they know more than they do or vet techs or assistantts. Most of the questions on here are medical questions that should be addressed by professionals not just any joe who could potentially kill their animal .
