my 8 year old son thinks that he's from the future. should i try to convince him that he isn't?

he claims that reincarnation works in reverse in relation to humans' perception of time, the science of his generation has figured out how to manipulate this, and he is the reincarnated consciousness of a scientist from the year 2036 who sent himself to our time in order to dispense the knowledge that humanity will need in order to survive certain events.

needless to say, this is odd stuff to hear come out of the mouth of an 8 year old, and i wouldn't normally consider such musings, but he displays a knowledge of advanced physics and quantum mechanics that doesn't seem normal for a child so young, and he's never been interested in Sci Fi movies or books.

should i A)tell he's lying, and not to say such things (in order to avoid ridicule, and possible institutionalization)
B)make him prove it to me
C)believe him, and try to help him avoid the extermination of human kind
or D)have him write it all down, and cash in, Phillip K Dick style?

he is able to predict certain events, but only with a certain amount of accuracy, because, he says- time is like a vast network of train-tracks, and that whenever you penetrate the continuum, a new track is created with a slightly different reality map.

Sounds like you have a very intelligent child with a knack for physics. You might have him tested for I.Q. and get him into a good school who will encourage his thirst for science, not hold him back like too many public schools.

Either that or you are making up a bunch of hogwash

My suggestion, mundane as it sounds, is to voice your concerns to your pediatrician and/or take your son to a child psychologist.

It's possible that your son is simply a very bright, lively eight year old with great creative skills and a wonderful imagination. In the absence of other information, that's what I suspect is the situation is. In that case by all means, have him write it all down. Perhaps whatever he writes will help pay for college, which if he's as bright as he sounds, will only be four or five years off.

It's also possible that he's right. I find this possibility extremely unlikely, but people's ideas of what is true do change from time to time. For example, sea captains no longer have to worry about sailing off the edge of a flat Earth.

Another less pleasant scenario is that he's not only bright and lively, but delusional. I hate to bring this scenario up, but having grown up with a mother who is delusional, I feel I have to. Happily, that is also an unlikely scenario, and one which probably can be cleared up fairly quickly by a professional.

Other than the concerns about his being ostracized at school, he sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck to you!

That is SOOOO weird. Maybe he is right, because my son has said the same thing--AND HE IS 7! I have been trying to tell him that he isn't really from the future, and sometimes he cried and begs me to believe him. Once he said, "What lies ahead, Mommy, is not what you would possibly know." And it was weird, because you could tell he was serious. About an hour later my boyfriend and I found ourselves in a car accident, not so serious, but the other guy got killed. But we only had minor injuries. It was REALLY weird.

As some one who works in this field I can tell you taht children are the most open creatures to the worlds that we adults like past. He might as well be as he says. Mainly write down what he says to you by age ten he will no longer be doing this he will no longer be open and be able to tell you stuff like he is now.
ask him if he knows any stuff , just for fun mind you, about the next couple years for example recorded medical break throughs. then write it down. wouldnt it be funny if he told you something major that happens in 2008 then grows past this and you check your notes and finds out he was right lol it would be mind blowing lol.

I would tell him to write me a story all about it. Tell him maybe it will be published because well it could be and that way he would be getting the word out. If nothing else it would give him a head start on his next school writing project. I don't know about cashing in but it might make him feel better if he wrote it all down.

You should ask your husband to join you and have a talk with your son. Is he copying it from the t.v. show? Or is it that his friends are so interested in those thing that he thought it was cool? Make sure you tell him the truth that he is not from the future. For better guidance, seek a school counselor.
