There have been at least four rationales. First we were told that Saddam had WMD, and that he even was working on a drone which could deliver a nuclear weapon to America. Rice said that we shouldn't wait for the mushroom cloud. Bush said we had to strike preemptively before a nation became an imminent threat. After WMD were not found, we were told we were bringing democracy to the country, by ridding it of a genocidal tyrant. Next, we were told that we were fighting terrorism over there so that it would not come to the United States. Then Bush and Cheney tried to associate Saddam Hussein with the 9/11 terrorists, so we were in Iraq to strike back at the 9/11 terrorists. Then we were told we were fighting to establish a "new Middle East" but that was not really defined, except as a place of modernity and "freedoms".. As of today, per Bush's most recent speech, it seems as though we are in Iraq fighting a global war on radical Islam.

To wipe out the Islamic Fascist so they won't accomplish their goals of a world under Islamic law. These crazy zealots will never complete their goal but they won't stop until that "goal" is achieved. We do not have the will to fight them right now but about the time we realized the fact that we have no choice but to fight them it will cost us gravely for taking so long to act and more people are going to die.

I think a stabilized Iraq would help fight and end this war on Islamic Fascist(not "war on terror") much sooner.

So this is how the 1930s(pre-WWII) felt like when most of the world didn't see Hitler as a threat.

I really don't understand the war either. However, the men and women putting their lives on the line daily have to believe that we as Americans believe in them.

There is a fine line between support and understanding. Support is what we give when we offer comfort to families of those fighting and dying. Understanding is what we give the Government who has sent them do fight and die.

Although you put voice to this question and it is well deserved please remember this and them in your thoughts and prayers.

If you dont know then you dont pay attention.

If the US were to pull out of the middle east now it would be a disaster. The insurgency would over run the country and we would lose all the progress we made. It would be a TERRIBLE move to pull out now.

haven't we all? there is a country song, Have We Forgotten, listen to it and watch the video. you know how things build up and eventually it will boil over, so we have to turn down the heat or put a lid on it and that is what the US has done for many years, that lid finally came bursting off...

I can't believe you just said that.
You "forgot"?
I've got family and friends that read this IN Iraq if they get a minute...
How about a "Thank You" instead? It would be much nicer than fueling frustration, dude.
The internet is not just limited to your little cush room. Don't get mama started, baby.
Thank you Chad T.

They are there to preserve our energy interests in the region, and destabilize the region to weaken the economies of neighboring nations like iran. Our presence is to establish a firm military foothold in the middle east that we can use to also secure our energy interests in central asia. With india and China's economies blossoming, soon we will be struggling against them for these resources in the region.
