The specific answer for Thailand, like all places, is impossible to know or closely estimate. However, in the case of Thai girls who work for a bar where foreigners go, there is a rather strong policy enforced by the bars. Girls working there have to be blood tested often, as often as once a month, and if their test fails and shows AIDS as present, they are fired immediately. Too, they are very well informed about STDs and will not "do it" without a condom. They know the visible signs of late stage infection, too, and check customers carefully during the usual shower before. So, if they want to keep working, as well as live, they keep very well informed about what to do. Very often, they can not just jump to a different bar (or even to an open beer garden pick up place) because the underground labels them. However, they can become a free lancer standing on the street or using a Web site. A sure sign of infections is that the girl does not care about using a condom. Apparently, the chance of infection of AIDS via unprotected oral contact is not answered for sure by medical science and girls do perform that way more frequently. But, herpes can be caught that way. Thailand is very modern in its attitude toward STDs, and altho polite company will never bring it up, it is widely known that many levels of govt and public opinion know that Thailand both is and must be very vigilant. Like all girls not all can be trusted but I think most bar girls want only one thing:

Men they can love and is honest and can be trusted,
take care off them and their family (read also financial)

But some problems:
1) Moving them out of Thailand to other country is asking for problems, these are country girls not used to big city life in foreigner country.
Allot of them are very unhappy;lonely outside Thailand,
cold weather they hate and they miss their family/friends.

2) They do speak English but it is poor,
writing is even bigger problem, they are using their friends for sending SMS and Emails or to help translate your emails.

I don't know anyone who has ever brought one home, though.

I believe that it is circumstances which compel the girls into that form of "escorting" (atleast it doesn't seem like any of the ones I hear about come from upper or even middle class families).... so I would guess that they could be trusted and remain faithful once given an economic situation where prostitution wasn't practically the ONLY way to make "good money".

as far as having a bargirl for a girlfriend i would say could not trust them. they are working as a bargirl because they have no other choice. if you come from a poor family and dont have money to go to school or college then alot of girls work in the bar to help pay for their family.im sure if they were given a chance at a decent job at a decent wage they would take it. if they can get money from you then there is no need to stop working as a bargirl same, just more money for her. dont ever send any money without meeting them and their family first to check things out. there are decent girls in thailand but becareful.

I do have come across some varied circumstances that these girls work in a bar. As answered by others, quite a few are driven from the country side to work in the city to support their family. Many of these are farmers and have no other skills. So in the city, they can only work in the service sector, in restaurants, hotels, bars and massage parlours. Their goalis to earn money to help support their family back in the country. They are looking to improve their economic condition. Usually they are low maintenance, just working to send money home.

These are the more dependable and reliable people you can be friends with, and you can trust them once you know them better. The idea of being able to be married will appeal to them much, and these can be faithful. They understand their sitiuation and will be glad to have someone who love them for who they are.

There is the other type who works for easy money. And the bars offer this. Plus the fact that there will be the occassional sugar-daddies that come along makes it worthwhile for them. They are not much into future plans, just willing to live out each day and just searching for the easy life. They are not likely to be the faithful type, as the more people they know, the more money they are likely to get.

If you come across any who is more interested in having you buy things for them and their know Prada from Gucci, it may be time to make a hasty retreat. Good entertainment at the bar and that is it. You should never go to any other level, no matter how pretty she is to you.

Then I do know of another group of girls, who come from fairly good family background, but do not want to stay in Thailand and is looking for prospective husband to get out of the country. They will be better educated and have their own plans. And their aim is just a ticket out of the country. If they like you, they will stay, otherwise after getting their ticket out, they may well disappear from your life. Again, you need to know the girl well to see if she has this inclination. If she has none of this, you are lucky. If she has, you have to be careful not to jump into a relationship too fast.

Then there is another type who is just do not like locals. These have good education and just do not want to settle with a local husband. Getting to know one will be your luck. She can be faithful.

Bottomline, get to know your girl well. Mix with her friends, this will give you an idea of her interests and her likings. Meet her family if you can. If she is willing to do that, she is pretty comfortable with you and also shows she has long term consideration with you. Best is for you to feel comfortable with her and her family. At least you will know of her intentions with you.

So there are good and there are bad. You have to know the person you are with is in which category. Best of luck.

Its pot luck ,some are ok and you can trust them but others no way !I know people that are married to ex bar girls and have been together for 15 years , but the only way that it can work is if you live here or they go to your country , if you only come here 2 times a year for 2 weeks a time can you seriously expect them to be faithfull ?

It's a tough life but the goal of most bar girls is to meet a farang who will take care of them so they can get out of the business. Most are trustworthy and beautiful too. Remember though, when you "take" a bar girl you usually end up taking the whole family to help also.
