A puppy scratched him a week ago, it healed I put some ointment on it and now he is scratching at it again. Today his eyes are very red on the outside and swollen looking. I am worried and would like to put him out of his missery. Yes we can go to the vet, buy does anyone have any suggestions in the mean time.

Did you get this ointment from the vet? If you did, it probably itches now from the healing process. If not, you may have made the problem worse. You really need to check with your vet to see if that ointment is ok. Even if the vet gave it to you, DON'T use it now without checking with the vet. Eyes are very touchy...never self-treat eye problems in pets unless you want them to go blind. You need to call your vet right away...they shouldn't charge you for asking a question over the phone. If they haven't seen him for the eye yet, they need to asap! If they have, they can tell you how to make him comfortable. You need to keep him from rubbing it...put an e-collar (cone) over his head if you have one. That will help til you talk to the vet.

Taking your dog to the vet as soon as you can is going to be the best option.

The scratch on his face probably was starting to itch as it healed and that explains why your dog was scratching. If his eyes are red and swollen, he could have possibly gotten some type of foreign material (ie: dirt, fur, etc) in his eyes, or he could have injured his eyes themselves with the amount of scratching.

Be sure that any type of medicinal ointment you used is safe to use near your dog's eyes. Neosporin or Bacetracin are acceptable to use on minor dog wounds, but be sure you aren't trying to use something like IcyHot or anything else with menthol in it.

If you can't get your dog to the vet tonight, definately make an appointment for the first thing tomorrow. I would also rinse any ointment off of his face and after making sure all of it was removed, gently pour some lukewarm water over his face to make sure he doesn't have dirt or other materials near his eyes. Don't use a cloth or try to rub anything away or you could accidentally cause more damage by pushing any potential foreign substances further into his eyes.

Since it's still fairly early in the evening, you could also stop by a specialty pet store tonight and purchase an e-collar--the cones that go around a dog's neck--to keep him from scratching near his eyes until he's seen by a doctor.

What kind of ointment did you put on his eye? Unless the ointment is made SPECIFICALLY for the eye area, then you are probably causing him a lot of pain and could possibly even cause blindness.

If the ointment is NOT for the eye area (and most ointments will say do NOT use in or around eyes) then wash the ointment off immediately and take the poor thing to the vet.

Really there's not much you can do at home to provide any relief for your dog. You don't want to injure the eyes or cause anymore discomfort to your dog, besides it could be a scratched cornea which is extremely serious and any medication could only harm rather than help.

Try to get a vet appointment soon to provide some relief for your dog, imagine how horrible it is when you get something in your eye.

Temporary relief could be a clean cloth moistened with warm water and applied to the eyes, if the dog cooperates. Good luck.

The puppy may have scratched your dog's cornea. This is a serious condition, but can be treated. Please do not delay. Keep your dog calm and away from irritants. Do not let him outside unless you are walking him, he may get in to weeds or bushes that can further irritate the eye. Do you have a little cough syrup, or benadryl you can give hime to calm him? Have your parents help you, do not medicate the dog yourself. Call the emergency vet and check for other remedies over the phone. Good luck.

My mom had a sharpea ( you know the wrinkly puppies) and her wrinkles would cause her eye lids to fold under and irritate her eyes she put Neosporean in her eyes and they cleared right up. The dog acted like the ointment wasn't even there either. So good luck hope this helped!

Not for eyes. Dog eyes are very different from ours. Try an e-collar and if that doesn't help get some good meds from the vet.

Mix up a solution of boric acid and water and put in an eye dropper or something to flush his eyes with it. If this doesn't work, I'd go ahead and take him in. Good luck.
