I'm 14 and for a while, probably since I was 10 (?) I feel like I have some sort of mental issue. Whenever someone is near me and eating or chewing gum and I can hear it in their mouth or just any other sort of small noises like tapping your feet or something like that, or seeing something out of the corner of my eye like someone chomping on gum again makes me very anxious and its frustrates me because I find it so unbelieveably annoying. Along with this, if I like scratch my ring finger cuticle on my left hand, i have to scratch all 9 others or else it feels so uneven. My older brother has ADD and my older sister has ADHD and bipolar disorder, and my grandma has OCD so I think there's a good chance I have something as well but I don't think my mom wants to believe that her one perfect child also has a mental illness. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on with me and how I can get my mom to believe me? (Also, she's a neurological nurse so she knows her stuff)

Oh, and I forgot to mention, things get much worse when it comes to sleeping.. If I have to share a hotel room with my parents who snore I will lay in bed for at least and hour and cry because I just want to get to sleep and it makes me so upset so I end up taking a pillow and sleeping on the bathroom floor. I've tried earplugs which only make it worse because it makes me like hear my breathing in a weird way that bothers me. Right now I take 5mg of Melatonin (a sleeping aid/vitamin) 2 hours before I go to sleep and then I turn a small fan on high to drown out sounds. I've tried a sound machine and from time to time I can handle white noise but everything else has little issues that I can't handle.

OCD. It can present in alot of ways. I am a counter, but never past ten. I take ten steps, start back at one. I am also a re-checker, I check my doors at nite at least 3 times b4 I go 2 bed. I check the coffee pot, curling iron, thermostat, dryer, and T.V before I can leave the house each day. I WILL NOT touch public bathroom door knobs after washing my hands, I freak out if I see food being eaten that has been out longer than an hour, and Icannot drink water that I had left over in my cup from the nite before( I have to have ten sips of water every nite, before I can sleep) My bookshelves are in a certain order, I bleach the tubs after they are used, and I treat my house for bugs at least once a week.Loud eating bothers me, and crooked decorations irk me. If mom won't--can't accept it, try to hold out until you can consent to Tx on your own. I know that sounds hard, but besides going to a school counselor;who will call your mom, there is not much else to do. Also, a psych nurse would have a better idea, your mom knows brain anatomy, and physiological disorders. If she treats tumors and that sort of thing, her psychiatric skills may be dusty. You could try using gramma as an ally. If she has OCD, she may obsess over the idea of you having it, and put the nag on mom for you. This stuff is inherited, and with such a large family history, you need to be checked out.

It could just be you are aware of all these factors. It seems you know a lot about all these diseases and perhaps deep down worry that you may also develop something. I went through periods of what you are talking about too but it was nerves and stress and insecurities...you're so young...those things will pass. I think you have to find other interests and make a conscious effor to start ignoring those types of things and force your brain to focus elsewhere. It's all mind over matter.
Don't go looking for trouble where there might not be any. Drugs are what you're going to be put on. However if you feel you need to talk to somebody about something that is a different matter, and you should at least try to do that as it may ease your mind.

ADHD (aka ADD), OCD and Bipolar are very similar and lots of the symptoms mimic each other. The only real way you'll know is to go to a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. But at 14, you'll need your mom's help.
Put it to her this way, you're asking for a diagnosis for you own peace of mind and she's too close to the situation to give you that. Even if you don't have one of those conditions, you do have some things you need to address. There is nothing wrong with seeking professional counseling (and if you get her to agree to that, you can enlist the help of the counselor to convince your mom). If you need more help, feel free to contact me at my ADD/ADHD site. http://addadhd.suite101.com

Are you sure you just don't have a normal 2 year old? Look at your parenting techniques first to see if your son's behavior isn't a result of your parenting. Any physician can have your 2 year old evaluated, so you don't need to come up with a diagnosis. But, also be prepared for the fact that you may just have a normal 2 year old who is reacting to your parenting.

OCD.. definately. you need to talk to your parents and/or a doctor. Those feelings, actions, and little pet peeves are all symptoms of OCD. However, you very well could be going through a phase or whatnot.. so don't jump to too many conclusions- talk to your doctor first.

possibly she is in denial, ask her to make a physical appt for you, if she won't go to your school nurse and ask for an appt with the school psychologist..maybe you expect something to be there and are looking for it..you may need reassurance you really are O.K. either way you could get on with your life..not knowing is 1/2 the battle..Good Luck
