The mustard plants found growing in Palestine, black mustard more commonly may grow to 4.6metres in height with a central stalk having the thickness of a man's arm. True the mustard seed is not the smallest of seeds but it must be remembered that Jesus always spoke to his audience about things they could readily relate to...remember they didn't have the knowledge that we have available today. Jesus was once again showing that even with the tiniest of faith we can achieve wonderful things, not because of our own strength but if our requests are in harmony with God then he will help us get over mountainous obstacles. James 1:6-8 says let him keep on asking in faith, not doubting at all, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and blown about. In fact let not that man suppose that he will receive anything for God, he is an indecisive man, unsteady in all his ways.
God feels this way because, just like us, if a person hasn't got any faith in us, he really doesn't beleive in us. Are we really moved to help a person that has such a negative attitude towards us....possibly, but we are imperfect humans who sometimes want to prove ourselves to people. Should we not have complete trust that God has the capabilities to bring forth any possibility. Therefore let our faith grow like that of a mustard grain and branch out and produce fruit.

Because He's really talking about Heaven. There are a lot of tree references in the Bible.
One pastor described our little ideas about helping our fellow man starting out as little seeds and growing into pieces of Heaven. The mustard seed is small but that's only the way it starts.

Because a tiny, tiny peace of faith, smaller than a mustard seed, can turn into something wonderful like a bush or a tree. With other words, if you are in a hopeless situation, a tiny, very small piece of faith can work wonders, just like the mustard seed......

what was said is that the kingdom of heaven is contained in the mustard seed. this means that to find the kingdom of heaven, you can look anywhere, even in the smallest thing imaginable.
oh, and I have seen (and grown) mustards that were much more like trees than bushes

people of Jesus' time, particularly the Jewish people, likened the Kingdom of God to one of the majestic cedars of Lebanon. Majestic and awe-inspiring--one of the greatest of trees. by comparing the Kingdom of God to the cedar the Kingdom seemed far off and unapproachable by man.
Jesus instead likened the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed that a man plants in his garden. with luck it will become a big bush--and a few birds might build nests in it. but by comparing the Kingdom of God to a mustard bush, Jesus is bringing the Kingdom down into our level of reality. suddenly the Kingdom is attainable by us mere mortals. the Kingdom of God is for all mortal men to attain---its wonderful and normal, just like a simple mustard bush. it's not some pie-in-the-sky divine thing that is only attainable by a few---like the great cedars of Lebanon.

The mustard seed is a tiny seed yet grows to be a large herb, like a tree, with many seeds. The mustard seed faith is growing faith. You just need to start with faith like a mustard seed. Faith needs to be watered, etc. to grow.

Depends on what kind of mustard you are talking about. Some grow to be great trees and other species are very small.

Since the Bible was originally in Hebrew, some words could have been replaced by other words or some may have been lost in translation. Sometimes, my pastor will have trouble relaying a specific emotion or event because the English language can't directly translate from words in the Hebrew language, as it is depicted in her copy of the Bible. That's the most I can offer you. I think it makes sense.

It also said the mustard seed is the smallest seed. That's also wrong. The orchid, for example, has a much smaller seed.

He said that it grew big enough for the birds to nest in. I suspect the mustard grows a bit bigger in Israel.
