Well hes 17m old... Just a baby . Hes practicing his sounds, thats what they do when they start learning to form sounds into words. I wouldn't try to punish him, hes still too young to learn like that. Obviously it didn't work. You could try sitting down with him and reading. You could try dictionary picture books, point to something and say "green frog" for example. Doing this he will start to develope a vocabulary and will probably make less sounds that you don't understand. Get him some learning toys that will talk to him when he pushes a button, I got my daughter a care bears counting one for 5.00 on clearence at toys r us. She going to be 2 in two weeks and can count to 10. There are lot of learning shows on TV that are good too. Give him a little more time and he will move on. If you feel his speach is behind you could contact a speach therapist and see if he needs additional help. Good luck, and remember hes just a baby.

get him something to do that will divert his attention from it - something more interesting than making the same annoying sound
maybe you could get one of the crayola color wonder books and markers - it's something my daughter loved when she first got one
he can color on the special paper, but the markers don't color on anything else - perfect for little kids who don't have the coloring thing down yet - but you will still want to keep an eye on him and help him, so he learns what he can do and shouldn't do with markers
or find another thing to entertain him, a new toy or book - doesn't have to be anything expensive, maybe just pick up a few cheaper items when you are out and keep them put away until you need them for something new and interesting
PS - sometimes when kids learn to make a certain sound or do something new, they do it over and over again, not to be annoying, but just because they think it's cool that they can

From the time my daughter was about 5 months to the time she was almost two, she made that "uhhnnnn, uhhnnnn", noise every time she was "reading" a book. She'd flip through the pages, (like in a telephone book) and make that noise the whole time. We joked and called it her "reading voice". Sometimes it is just a soothing technique that young children use. He probably is doing this not knowing that you are annoyed by it. Ignore the behavior, and try to involve him in doing something else for an activity.

Dont punish him for it.
Just ignore it, go in the other room if you have to . Or distract your self with a song or music.
As the other person wrote it could be an early sign of Tourettes SYndrome.Probably not but if it is he cant help it.
Sometimes they just start making noises because it is enjoyable.

I don't think you can. I think they like to experiment alot with new sounds and words the learn and then they use them incessantly. He'll probably stop in a few days and then start on something new.

17 months old? Not sure if this applies, but I knew a neighbor who had a kid, would constantly make this freaky noise with his mouth.... like a wounded dog. And it'd get especially bad if he was around new people. They took him to the doc and he was diagnosed with terrets....
