I would like to begin by congratulating you on learning a second language. The US is one of the few countries where the population on average knows only one language. Most other countries people know on the lower end an average of three languages.
I am saying this because I know. I speak spanish, english, and portuguese. My next language to learn is either going to be chinese or arabic--haven't decided yet.

There could be several reasons why they are giving you funny looks.
A--Could be because you are some random person trying to interact in this click which you have not become a part of yet. So although it may have a little do with the fact that you are speaking spanish, it may have more to do with the fact that you have not taken the proper social steps to gain the respect of this group. Its like going to eat lunch at the cheerleader's table, the football team's, drama club's, or chess club's table. I'm sure they'd look funny at you too if you tried to join them.

B---Secondly from experience I know that no matter how much "book" learning you've done. The true language is not spoken in the matter that it is taught. Another example. We don't say...."thou shalt not covet" we say " girl please, don't be jealous". We also don't say " that's procisely what I was pondering about---we say "that's exactly what I was thinking".

Hope this helps....lot's of luck to ya!

And definately keep practicing!

I know I only get upset when a person speaks Spanish to me when it seems like they don't expect me to know English and they just want to show off how much they know. The fact that you think you speak Spanish better than them might be a part of the problem. If they speak English, there should be no reason for you to speak Spanish to them even if they speak it to other Hispanic people. They might do that because it feels strange to speak to certain people in English, the way it would feel strange to speak to some people in Spanish.

May be they resent your superior attitude. And just because you speak their language doesn't mean you are one of their group.
