Many have said drivers license, which is true, or other government issued picture ID .... but you ALSO need to have birth certificate or other proof of citizenship ... if not to get into Canada, then definitely to get back in to the states. Save yourself the hassle, just do it.
Also, someone mentioned about kids ... you need birth certificate for them as well, and if both parents aren't with them, a note from the parent not present indicating permission for child to cross the border.
For pets, you need proof of rabies vaccination.
Enjoy your trip.
(Passports required as of January 2007)

Just an ID or driver's license. I agree with toronto-guy. In 2007, you would need a passport to Canada. Mexico could be next.

Us citizens do not require a passport or a visa . YOU SHOULD CARRY A DRIVERS LICENSE,voters registration, and a birth
certificate. I f you are travling with children be sure and bring
proof that they belong to you[birth certificate] You can not carry firearms into Canda without a special permit. your insurance company needs to give you a non resident card. You should also pick up a copy of [the milepost] it will give you this information and a whole lot more! You can get it a a camping store are maybe the library. Its great!!!!

Legally, you like in simple terms common identity to flow into Canada. A driving force's license is sufficient. although, an American regulation calls for each guy or woman to have a passport to flow into the country, even a returning American. So, you'll want one to flow into Canada, or you would be caught right here. As for refusing get admission to: if a guy or woman has a criminal checklist, they are able to be refused. in the event that they don't look to be truthful of their replies to the Customs Officer's questions, they are able to be refused, and it rather is as much as the discretion of the Officer to settle in this. And, there is not any charm. If somebody is donning a weapon, they are going to be refused - even pepper spray is sufficient. If it variety of feels like the guy is attempting to bypass to Canada illegally, or there are different doubts, they are able to be refused. contained in maximum folk of situations, crossing the border is speedy, basic, and painless. they are going to prefer to appreciate who you're, the place you're going, and why, and that they had ask how long you intend to stay. often, it rather is approximately it!
