I am of the belief that the female has to be in heat before the male will even try to do such a thing, but would appreciate correct information. Thanks everyone!

Most of your answers center around the neuter issue and that's my own fault (though really April Michelle was the sarcasm and personal attack REALLY necessary?). I have a relative who bought a stud to begin breeding cats and she has just brought home a 4 month old female. I was trying to determine if they needed to be kept separated until the female is old enough to have a litter. Sorry for leaving out this obviously important info.

He won't be successful until she's in heat, but you need to get them both fixed ASAP! If either of them gets out of the house, they will be producing unwanted litters, just like having them both intact in the house. I would really recommend spaying her if you can only do one at a time....cats in heat are not fun! She is old enough to be spayed.

A intact male will mate with a female when she is in heat. It's nature's way of giving a green light to the male.

Consider having the male neutered before the female comes into heat, which could be as early as five months old. It's less expensive to neuter a male cat then spay a female. Check with your local humane society or animal control agency to see if there are organizations that offer low cost neutering for your male cat.

A male cat is just like a man, if the chance is there he will take it! Just kidding, but yes he will try to mate with her and supposedly a male can cause a female to go into heat when she picks up on his "excitement" about it. Don't know if that is true or not but I have heard it quite a few times.

She has to be at least 6 or 7 mo to breed....that gives you plenty of time to get one of them fixed.

For her to get pregnant, she has to be in heat, but he may try to mount and breed her before that. Why don't you get them fixed???
