There are arguments in favour of allowing an individual to choose between life and suicide. This view sees suicide as a valid option and a human right and argues that no being should be made to suffer unnecessarily. This view notes that suicide provides an escape from suffering in certain circumstances, such as incurable disease or mental illness, and old age. These theories are most commonly held in Continental Europe, where euthanasia and other such topics are discussed in parliament, and in some areas of the United States.

This view rejects the common belief that suicide is always or usually irrational, saying instead that it is a genuine, albeit severe, solution to real problems – a line of last resort that can legitimately be taken when the alternative is considered worse.

On the other hand, a young and healthy person, free from any major trauma in their past, in their opinion free from any mental disorders, and with a future even regarded as bright by observers, can come to the decision that they don't find life rewarding and that they wish to end their experience then and there. This is usually met with a negative reaction, and these persons are often persuaded from their feelings and beliefs, while others choose to disregard such pressures. Those who ultimately kill themselves under these circumstances might argue that going to heaven, or the "peace of nothingness" that comes with death, is much more appealing than the experiences they expect to have in this world. They may feel too eager for this better state of (non)existence to wait, especially during modern times in which the human lifespan is progressively increasing.

In the past, the Japanese were sometimes ordered by their superiors to commit harakiri, a form of ritual disembowelment suicide. This was expected as a matter of honour where staying alive committed a greater dishonour to their family. They may also have done it as a matter of free choice, also for the sake of honour, and it was considered better than being taken prisoner. Achieving a placid indifference to life or death was considered a state of enlightenment in certain Buddhist traditions.

In the fundamentalist branch of religions it is not a sin to committ suicide. It is a waste of the God given life but I have always thought it sad that these people feel they have no other alternative for their situation/problems. A friend had her son do this last spring and their family will never be the same. He left a wife, a toddler child who will never remember her daddy and family members who are in terrible pain and feeling guilty because they could not predict this terrible tragedy.

Did you know that there were societies where members of it had to take a canu and go into the sea when they became useless to society? Some old Eskimo tribes did that a long time ago---they killed themselves by going into the sea without food and water in a boat that could hardly survive any storms. So to me, it depends why you would kill yourself. For example, if you kill yourself because your boyfriend breaks up with you, then the motive in that is sort of "haha, I'm out of it, you deal with it now", where I see the act as a malicious punishment for the one who broke up the relationship.
But if a cancer patient who is in terrible pain decides to kill himself because he will die anyway, and the killing of self will prevent a death in horrible pain--then no, I would not consider that sin. Is it sin if someone decides on how much pain they can endure? I think not.

If the killing comes after one has killed another, it is an act of cowardice---and also a sin, for the killer wants to avoid being punished by law. I do not believe that anyone can get so out of whack that they do have to kill another, not know what they are doing, but then are smart enough to avoid justice by killing themselves. So to me, it depends why one kills himself. If it is to avoid to die in horrible pain, I do not see it as a sin---we do euthanize our beloved pets to not have them suffer, so we should have the same right--at least by killing ourself.

The question is a very good question about ethics. It is said in the Bible "Thou shall not kill", and a lot of Christians do like to interpret it in the manner where it includes suicide, but would that not be defined in the Bible? Therefore, to me, nowhere in the Bible is it written that one cannot take his own life if there is a solid reason--such as painful terminal cancer, multiple disabilities--such as being blind, deaf, and in a wheelchair---those are to me the justifible suicides that should not be considered sin---the only one who can declare that a sin is God!!

A gift from God? That's a joke. What one does with their life is their own business. If life is too miserable or painful to go on, then why should the concept of God or sin come into the equation? If God didn't want someone to kill themselves, then something would stop them.

Killing yourself isn't a sin. It's not how a person should deal with their issues either. But the negative karma they've created will have to be dealt with, and that's mostly (as far as I know) only over breach of any contract with God, that they may not have completed. The idea that we have only one life is a lie created to use suicide as a tool of fear as hell is, to make us (humanity) easier to be controlled by the shadow government.

It is controversial. Even if does not directly address the topic in the bible, it falls under multiple categories. But there are many things in the Bible that are not mention that many religions discuss. What about being forced to kill yourself? What about a baby accidentally killing itself? What about unintentional killing of oneself? What about killing yourself in the name of God, like Jesus did? What about a human "vegetable" deciding to kill themself? Isn't that person better off? There are many answers to all of these questions. However, suicide, in general, would be a sin if it is an intentional outright, experience.

I say that suicide (the act of killing yourself) runs counter to the purpose of being given a life in the first place if you are contemplating suicide get professional help even if the best you can do in that department is call the national suicide prevention hot-line 1-(800)-273-TALK (8255) I personally think that someone who commits suicide is sent to hell.

Taking any life, yours or someone else's, is a definite sin. You are right about throwing away the greatest of gifts.

it depends on the way and for what you kill yourself, the reason may be okay for:

- pain made by diseases (pancreatic cancer,...)
- at war, to not transmit vital informations (ex Jean Moulin, french resistant at WW2 )
- to protect someone in a war zone,...
- in some civilisation, as for exemple the japonese one, suicide may be interpreted as an honor for samurais

by i affirm that this situation is a one way ticket, so you ld better think it twice before because in some others situations, the why is so stupid, that it makes me really sad :

- your boy or girlfriend just broke with you before the prom'
- your parents do not respect you,.... there is no way i post bail for it

all the religion reject suicide, the reason is that , they keep up hope, to kill himself is (in a way) to kill hope

actually, the greeks also thought along similar lines. taking your own life was an insult to the gods. mortal life was a gift and suicide was the equivalent of being ungrateful and wasting their gift of life.
