It depends on the language u use on your pc.You can select which languages you want to write with your keyboard from Control Panel/Languages/Add language. Then whichever time you wanna type in a different language you can change it pressing Alt+Shift Then the way to put these dots over the letters differ from language to language.I can only guide you for Greek and German.

If you select typing in greek then you can put dots (διαλυτικά , dialytika) only above letters "ι" and "υ" by pressing "Shift+;" and then one of the 2 letters. For example ϊ or ϋ.

If you select to type in German and you have a Microsoft keyboard then the letters with "umlaut" are typed when you press the key " ; " for "ö" , the key typing the character " ' " for "ä" and the key typing the character " [ " for "ü"

I hope this will help zou a bit

Just a side note...in German (especially), the two little dots over a vowel are called "umlauts"...at least they are in german LOL

Anyhow, we were taught in class that if you didn't know the character map alt+ keystrokes (that people above me have spoken of) you could just use the vowel followed by an e.

For example: German word for cheese is "käse", but we were allowed to type it out as "kaese". I've seen this done in many American publications whether it be lack of ability to create the character in the printing equipment or not knowing how.

Like I said, just a side note--maybe others were taught differently. But I use the alt+ keystrokes. Best of luck!

Go the the Character Map. It will give you all kinds of special characters. for example I have an accent mark over my name. the code to get it is alt+0233 ( but you have to use the number pad on a desk top and the "purple" numbers on a lap top key board for the codes :)

They are called ohm lauds and you cannot unless you are using a European typewriter or computer with this feature.
