I'm basically going to be taking picture of nature and some people and other stuff that may be far away (like 50 yards). Something fairly cheap, like $300 and below. Thanks!

Okay...

I would go with the Nikon Coopix P@ 5.1 Megapixel Camera. It has 3.5 times optical zoom (which is a zoom where you do not loose picture quality) and an additional 4 times digital zoom.

It is very easy to use, sufficient in shooting people, scenes, and objects from 50 yards away as you would like. It's inexpensive for what you get.... just less than $270, it has a really cool feature that easily transfers photos to your computer wirelessly (if you have a wireless router), and it has a very nice sized 2.5" LCD viewing screen.

Along with these above features which are great for any novice, there are many advanced features on this camera that will allow you to advance in your digital photo skills; such as a 30 frames per second movie mode with voice recorder, 16 specially programmed modes to automatically handle focus, exposure, white balance and other adjustments that help you take great pictures at the press of a button. Nikon adds a new level of fine control with Advanced Scene Modes, and the 16 programmed modes offer a choice of three effects that can further enhance the results of several of the automated Scene Modes to more closely fit your personal preferences.

I've had an HP photosmart before, when I was familiarizing myself with digital cameras and it really wasn't that great. Now i have a Nikon... the one I recommended and it's great. Not planning to buy one for awhile. Good luck, though!
