Hi! I have Hashimoto's. Basically, we are talking hypothyroidism. The thyroid controls all your body timing, like heartbeat, breath rate, metabolism, etc. Yes, it is serious, but only until you are normalized on replacement thyroid hormone, like Levoxyl, Synthroid, etc. Once you are, it just means a blood test every 3-6 months to ensure you're fine -- that's it. And the meds cost about $12 a month.

Now, here's the kicker. It is a lifelong thing. There is no cure, just replacement hormone. Once you reconcile yourself to a little pill each morning, you'll be fine.

autoimmune thyroiditis (that's what hashimoto's dz is) can be pretty serious, since the thyroid gland is so important in regulating a lot of the body's functions. read up more at link below.

If it is not affecting thyroid function, not too serious. However, over time, it may cause hyperthyroidism as your thyroid is damaged and tries to overcompensate. Then as the damage progresses, it causes hypothyroidism. Try to take an herbal thyroid formula to stop the disease progression.

I recently found a good online resource about hypothyroidism. I wanted to know more about treatment options and how to stop hypothyroidism at the source and I bumped into this program called hypothyroidismrevolution. I found it very useful. Check it out here http://hypothyroidism.toptips.org
