When you spray the plant with Glyphosate.

Watering is #1 cause the poor things will die. Fertilizing is #2 cause they'll die after a few years if they don't eat.

But, artistically Pruning is #1 Wiring and Trimming tied for second.

Showing it off only works when all of the above are done well.

All are 'facets' & none are to be ignored as part of the whole... initial trimming of the roots and periodic pruning are the basics to finding form.. the wiring comes as inspiration does... and fertiliaztion is the love component which must accompany any horticultural endeavor. Showing is sharing... and that is the apex of the heart's expression!

The trimming of the roots. By not regulating root growth the plant can suffer a lot. IF the roots are not trimmed then the bonsai would not be classified as a bonsai but simply as a tree.

With regard to growing the first, five are all equally important. However, pruning is the most difficult to "repair", especially when the roots and trunk are concerned.

The same holds true in a show but a wonderful tree that is shown improperly will be less likely to win than if it had been shown properly.
