When asked why she boiled crabs alive, my grandma would say, "because that's the only way to kill the dam things!"

Not true at all and not true for lobster either. I don't know what you people are talking about!!! My family eats both blue crab, lobster, and all shellfish very often and we catch it or buy it and like to clean out the insides before we cook it. To do that you have to have a dead piece of fish! Even the restaurant known for their "Bucket O Crabs" in Seaside Park, NJ cleans the crabs before they cook them. If they went bad the board of health would not allow that.

Nope, I've seen plenty of people making gumbo with blue crabs. They were all frozen at the time.....though they would be fresher alive.
Some of these people are total idiots. Do they really think that every time someone or a restaurant cooks shellfish, it is alive. I think not...

Yes live crabs only unless cooked by the supplier when they were alive.
Crabs spoil rapidly once dead and you maybe contaminated with bacteria (food poisoning) if you cook dead crabs.

i know that lobster do have to be, because they will release some sort of chemical that will ruin the eating experience, which is why they throw them alive into boiling water. I think its wrong personally. Im not sure if this applies to all crustaciens or not.

Never cook dead crabs, lobsters, shrimp, crayfish etc.
When those animals die, they start to go back pretty quickly, and if they died from a disease, you might not know it. Only cook the live ones and then you know for sure they are fresh and not diseased. Diseased seafood can kill you.

yes they do. I'm not sure the exact reason, but I know they're not good if you cook them once they've died.
