“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Think about it. Why do we dismiss Zeus, Hera and Aphrodite? What if we put all the energy and money that curriently supports religion, into scientific research? Would faith hold fast?

I'll tell you what would happen if religion was disproved beyond a doubt right now. Most of civilization would collapse. Why? Because there is no other moral code to use, yet. No social rules as efficient as those of christianity have yet been created. Religion has been disproved, it is untrue, but people still hold on, and I don't blame them either. What is called faith is really just pragmatism. People realise that religion is a good social control, and thus it doesn't really matter whether it is true. What is true is what works, and so when you question religion, all you are saying is that there is something more beneficial out there, that religion is in the way of.

I would say the biggest thing in the way of atheism is the lack of consensus on what will replace theism. This is why when theists imagine atheists, they imagine Dawkinsites. Atheism is not nihilism, and the misconception that two are in any way related will be the greatest stumbling block to atheism's growth.

properly, i do no longer understand. Your Atheist interior the representation above has chosen to no longer evaluate. That, my expensive, is a option. I even have an abhorrence for cliches to be candid, even nonetheless we've loose will. God won't inimically tension himself upon somebody in any admire. I comprehend that to an infidel or a skeptic, that the evidence is anemic or probable even null and void. From that element of view, that's silly to contemplate in a God that's invisible. yet while the unbelief is only predicated upon the reality that God is invisible or impalpable, i think that there might desire to be a extra physically powerful reason for such skepticism. inspite of each little thing, there are a plethora of concerns that are fairly, even nonetheless are invisible. God has a vantage element that none all human beings is privileged with. He can see into absolutely everyone's middle and soul- actually. If I, as a born as quickly as extra Christian, have been to mock God and pray with out being earnest, the prayer could be meaningless. somebody has to intend IT while they pray. somebody might desire to intend IT while they ask God for forgiveness. i'm specific that God knows of that we are skeptical creatures- he's physically powerful extensive unsleeping of this actuality. It would not supply somebody the perfect to denigrate God. the entire undertaking interior the above representation which you illustrated is an attitudinal undertaking. If absolutely everyone has a center of stone and that they are in basic terms spiteful interior the process God, God won't be able to help that character till he or she adjustments. If absolutely everyone can in basic terms have an open middle and an open ideas, God can artwork with a spirit of cooperation. might you opt to artwork with absolutely everyone that was once hateful interior the process you? top. that's all interior the perspective. God can see regardless of if or no longer or now no longer we are mocking him. God can see absolutely everyone's precise intentions, their ulterior factors, and what they somewhat mean, even nonetheless than what appearances is likewise.

This is a place where I understand but disagree with the quote.
I see each of us (mankind) as a false god.(For Bible believers Gen. 3). Thatis part of the need for what I call the '2 or more witnesses' principle, given to the Jews and Christians alike.
Science or its research, would be simply a gaining of knowledge, not the discernment of what to do with that knowledge. (1Cor. 8:1)

Doesn't that kind of make science your religion? I can understand why some people don't believe in any specific kind of God, but it seems like everybody puts their faith in SOMETHING. For you, it sounds like it's the scientific method.

(don't get me wrong, I love science, and I do learn a lot from it, I just wanted to point that out).

Best wishes

Because "gods" like Zeus and such all have character flaws similar to the humans who created them - lust, envy, greed, etc.

The Christian God has bestowed up the people He created some of his character, but in a good way. We, too, have love, anger, jealousy, hate, etc. But, God teaches how to deal with those in His way, not the humanistic approach.
Remember, Jesus got angry at the money-changers at the temple because they were defiling His Father's temple. Jesus' anger was righteous, not self-indulgent as we humans are wont to do.

I used to facetiously ask, "What did Jesus exclaim when he'd smack his thumb with a hammer"? - because he was a carpenter by trade. It was an open-ended question posed to make people ponder that in a humorous way.

Stephen Roberts is merely trying to sound deep & philisophical, but coming across as ignorant, and full of himself.

God is the end result of a failed search for truth by a very shallow mind, provided that any search was made at all instead of swallowing the pile of delusional bilge that was spoon fed to you as a child

I am not a person of faith. As a matter of fact I am a whore. Nonetheless, I wonder why atheists are trying to get theists to see there point of view and vice versa.

In short, who gives a flying f**k?

Has anyone ever performed a miracle in the name of Allah?
How many people do you know who have died because they wouldn't deny Apollo?

You may think Christians are just blindly following something that makes them feel good... but a lot of us have really thought it out.

Now I turn it back on you... are you blindly following something that makes you feel good?

"Atheists" joking about deities over and over again?

Those aren't true atheists but agnostics.

True atheists don't even speak about any kind of deity. They just don't care about deities.
