Monkey Puzzle Trees are the most primitive. They have long been important to the native peoples of Chile. The tasty, almond-sized seeds are a staple food of the Pehuenche Indians. The tree is honored at their altar of harvest, and is used in fertility ceremonies.
The bristlecone pine, Pinus longaeva, is the oldest known tree species in the world.

The bristlecone pine only lives in scattered, arid mountain regions of six western states of America, but the oldest are found in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains of California. There the pines exist in an exposed, windswept, harsh environment, free of competition from other plants and the ravages of insects and disease. The oldest bristlecones usually grow at elevations of 10,000 to 11,000 feet.

The oldest known tree is "Methuselah", which is 4,789 years old. To keep Methuselah from harm, this tree isn't labeled, as the other trees are. An older tree called Prometheus was killed shortly after it was discovered in 1964. This happened when a geologist searching for evidence of Ice Age glaciers was taking some core samples from several bristlecones. Just as he realized he had found a tree over 4,000 years old, his coring tool broke. Amazingly the U.S. Forest Service gave him permission to cut down the tree. Prometheus turned out to be 4,950 years old. It was a 300 year old tree when the pyramids were being built in Egypt. After people heard about this incident, the U.S. Forest Service tightened security around the bristlecones.

Bristlecone Pine I thought everybody knew that. The most primitive seed they scientist were able to cultivate was a male magnolia seed in a rice silo that was over 1000 years. The plant has bloomed and for some reason on the same branch some of the flowers have more petals then others. 99.999 flowers follow a pattern and does not change like this Mangolia.

The most primitive cone-bearing plants are cycads. Next most primitive is Ginkgo. There is no evidence that Araucarias (like the so-called Monkey-Puzzle tree) are very primitive conifers.

I usually avoid "Wiki answers" on this page but the Wiki entry on this subject is very good and gives the current view of relationships in the conifers. The family tree of conifers shown indicates that the Pinaceae are the earliest major group of the true conifers.

The dawn redwood or Metasequoia glyptostroboides? It is a deciduous conifer, thought to be extinct until a Chinese student in the U.S. identified a fossil in his class as a tree that was alive and growing in his neighborhood.
