I believe we are talking about an acrylic or plastic surface here. The actual bulb is inserted from behind.

Over the years and with much road debris later, the clear plastic housing can get scratched, dulled, and coated with film that makes it scatter light more than direct it as it was designed.

You will need to buy materials or a kit to polish the surface to original clarity. This will involve elbow grease but not too much. I've already done the turn signals on my Honda Prelude and they look NEW again. Check out this web site and buy the materials from them:

You will start by wet sanding the surface with a lower (more grit) number pad and sand the surface in one direction. You gradually move up to finer grits working in 45 degree angles to the previous pad. You will need about 8-10 stages before you move to the liquid abrasive but it is really quite easy.

Check out that web site and see if I am wrong! Good luck!

Just as you would the finish of the paint. Some detailing pros like to use convertable window polish. But I pull out circular buffer 2,300rpm and the really course tan color rubbung compound and really work it in. Now you are covered with compound and the car has spots. Aw! Clean the whole car too!

If you have plastic lenses, use Novus. Use the deep scratch remover than the medium then the light. Works very well.

They have scratch removal kits made especially for this and they should be available at a good auto parts store.
