Why don't the illegal immigrants bother to learn english? Even the one that came here like 10 years ago still don't know english! Which is wrong. You should learn! And I can't even read a label or go anywhere with them posting it in spanish and english. What about polish?

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Hey garbagefan2,

Well, I think that immigrants (legal and illegal) know just enough to get around in what they came here to do (dishwasher, maintenance, warehouse). Is it that they interest you so much you want to sit down and have a long conversation with them and you just can't? You obviously don't know a second language so you won't be able to enjoy their company. Wrong you say? Is there a right or wrong here? They shouldn't do anything, they'll survive just the way they have...the USA still remains a "melting pot" and any person has the right to live here and NEVER EVER learn the language. Bye!

Uh, how 'bout "Why don't illegals get their citizenship?". I think they should learn English. I'm pretty sure part of getting your citizenship requires the knowledge of the language of the land (but I don't know that for a fact), and if it's not, it should be. It never really bothered me that they have Spanish labels or when you call you hear "Para por que blah blah blah Espaniol blah blah el numero dos" until I went on the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland and after hearing a scary voice in English telling me to keep my hands and legs inside at all times I heard a scary voice in Spanish telling me the same thing... They crossed the line when they ruined my riding experience. It just throws the whole ride off hearing "ghosts" speaking Spanish! If they don't want to learn English, and choose to speak only their native tongue, that's fine, but we should not have to accomadate our country to fit the needs of people who do not belong to our country.

If employers only hired English speaking individuals that would make them learn English quickly. But cheap labor is fantastic isn't it.

Speaking of Spanish speaking. Lets change our cities names no more San Francisco, no more Los Angeles, no more Las Vegas, no more Escondido, no more Chula Vista, etc. etc. if you really want to get technical.

I am American, but sometimes Americans are the ultimate in egotism. In Europe the greatest percentage know more than one language. Does it really heart us to let another language exist here? Yes, they should learn English, But does it hurt you? It only hurts them, besides have you ever tried to learn another language? It isn't easy, I know because I am now trying to learn Spanish in college.

Porque, no te gusta!

You are the dumb little American the rest of the world hates. How many languages do you speak? Probably one, and judging by your grammar, you're not that good at it either. You probably haven't ever left America, so you wouldn't know that in many countries their native peoples can speak up to five languages fluently. And, in many of those countries, people can speak and write better english than the average American. You sound very average.

However, among other reasons why poor uneducated Mexican immigrants do not learn english, is that they spend 70 to 80 hours a week doing hard labor for which they are grossly underpayed. Another reason they do not learn English fluently, is because America obviously doesn't require it. Did you vote for officials that mirror your view on immigration? Lastly, you may be surprized thaty many of them do speak English, but probably don't like your gringo ****.

Good question. If I were to at some point wish to relocate to France, I would certainly not expect the French to cater to me and label everything in English. I would fully expect that I should learn the language.
The root of our problem here is that we enable people to NOT learn the language by catering to them. If we would INSIST that ENGLISH is spoken, more people would learn. As it is, they really don't have to.
