Here's a cure that hasn't been mentioned. Make your co-worker sneeze. Using pepper is the easiest way. Sometimes, even just pretend sneezing works too. It has something to do with the muscles used in sneezing that will counteract the spasming epiglottis. If the hiccups last longer than a day, he/she may need medical attention. Good luck .

Sipping cold water;
Drinking water out of the ‘wrong’ (opposite) side of the glass;
Breathing into a paper bag (NEVER place a bag over your head);
Holding your breath for a short period;
Pulling your knees up to your chest.
A hiccup is an involuntary reaction caused by the sudden movement of the diaphragm and normally they only last a few minutes.
In the case of your co-worker there could be some underlying problem which is causing the prolonged bout of hiccups. There could be any number of possible reasons including infection, irritation of the phrenic nerve (this controls the diaphragm), malaria, kidney infection, cancer, brain tumour and a whole host of other possibilities which can't possibly be diagnosed without a medical examination.
If you co-worker suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, is taking tranquilizers, has metabolic problems or has recently had an aneasthetic (e.g. for dental work) these can all cause prolonged hiccuping.
Because hyperglycaemia can cause hiccups it's a bad idea to take sugar (hyperglycaemia is caused by too much sugar and taking more will exacerbate the problem).
If the problem persists for more than 48 hours then your co-worker should see a doctor who will likely take urine and blood samples and may also order a scan such as an MRI, CT or ECG scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging / Computerised Tomography / Electrocardiogram).

I do this:
1. Take deepest possible breath
2. Hold until you absolutely cannot keep it any more.
3. Release.
Or try this:
Have somebody hold your ears shut (meaning plug-em)
and drink any liquid as quickly as you can . . . until you need to come up for air
Should work.
