Do your tipping amounts vary between TYPES of service? (i.e. cab driver, waitress, hairdresser, etc.)
I get so tired of tipping large amounts for practically every service... I mean, I don't skimp, I'm pretty generous. I just resent having to dish out even more, after paying the initial sum of the service, PLUS tax, and then more for the tip. I mean, I know everyone needs to make a living, but it's not like *I'm* rich either...

I am a firm believer in tipping according to service. I dont do a percentage - if the service is great. I tip better if the service was okay, then i give a small amount, if the service was lousy, I dont tip at all. Like it or dont, its my choice.

I tip 18-20% to waitstaff & bartenders, 15% if they're no good.
My hairdresser & mani-pedi guy get 20% (I like them).
I usually give cabbies about $2-3- maybe more if I'm going a really long distance (to the airport or something).
I would never tip less than15%, the amounts above were the amounts I was given by my auntie, who works in the hospitality industry. My husband always tips 10% though- and isn't above leaving nothing if the service is bad. I remember once, when we first started dating- when he was away from the table, near the end of the meal, I slipped our waiter some money and whispered something about wonderful service, and my apologies because "he's a terrible tipper". I feel bad about that now- if he knew he'd probably be SO embarassed- or maybe just insulted...

Resturuants I tip 15%, bars I tip a dollar a drink, cabs I usually tip 3-8 depending on the fare and distance. On New Years it was impossible to get a cab so I shot a driver 40 bucks as a tip for a fare that was way cheaper then that.
Hairdresser I have no clue what the standard is. I used to get my hair cut for about 25$ and would tip 5,
Also if the service stinks instead of leaving no tip like an earlier answer said you should tip a penny. Some people may not be aware that tipping is customary, so no tip doesn't send that strong of a message. Tipping a penny is just a huge FU to your server.

I think the more 'personal' the service the better you should tip. The only two places I tip regularly are restaurants and hair cuts. For average service I will tip 15%. If the server shows some sort of personality I'll tip closer to 20% but that's me. For hair cuts, the place I go charges $13 (yes, I am a guy) so I tip $2 to make it an even $15. When it used to be $12 I tipped $3. If they go to $14 I'll probably keep it at $2.
I very rarely use porters, cabies, bell hops, etc. so I can't help there.
I never contribute to the tip jar that's placed next to the cash register at the coffee shop, ice cream parlor, etc.

i know the rule is 15-20% but i am not rich either.. I usually tip about 2 bucks per person- depending on how many are there. And it also depends on the service. For the cab- i give about 2 bucks, hair about 4-5 (depends on if it is cute, but then again i always spend like 70 so sometimes it is less), Waitresses are hard workers for the most part, but i stick to the 2 buck per person because i usually have 5 people with....
Now my bartender? I give him a five so i can have strong drinks ALL night!!!

If the service was just average, I give between 10-15% in a restaurant. My percentages are the same with every type of service.
Stellar service gets 18-20% from me.

For average service: $2-$3...Hell, we've already spent $20-$40 on average food...I only tip waiters/waitresses, stylists and manicurists. I feel the mailman already makes a decent salary, he doesn't need a tip but the ones who only make minimum wage and less an hour or whose salary is based off of how many clients they serve and the type of service provided, I tip them.

For poor service, I tip 10%. For average, I tip 15%. For excellent service, I tip 20%. This is just what I came up with myself and I feel pretty good about it.

I usually try to tip at least 20% of the bill, even for poor service. I just think of this as part of the price for dining out. When you receive exceptional service tip more if you can.

I always tip between 15 & 20 %.
Tipping isn't fun... but before I get any service I calculate the tip in automatically. I find it easier to do it that way.
