Wars are waged in the name of religion generally because the perpetrators have no other valid excuse for hostilities. Beneath every religious ideal there is another - one which is the real reason for starting or perpetuating the conflict. Territorial aspirations, the potential riches of oil reserves, the 'cleansing' of rival tribes or cultures, the list goes on. You can find numerous parallels throughout history - the 'Holy' Crusades of Richard III, the Boer War, both of the World Wars, Rwanda-Burundi, Yugoslavia, Iraq, the list goes on.
Whatever the stated reason that is claimed, there is always an underlying principle that conveniently cites religion to disguise the true motive.

If you're referring to wars, religion actually has little to do with it. All wars are the result of a lust for power. All the major religions condemn lustful behavior. Political leaders who rally armies to fight are distracted by their desire for good real estate. If most religions didn't condemn greed, envy, wrath, and other destructive behaviors, there would be a lot more of it. People don't try to kill each other just because they have different beliefs and traditions. Before religion, tribes warred. it's just human nature.

It is so absurd to wage war in the name of religion. I believe that we all worship the same God. Why can't the world just embrace our differences and accept each other? Undoubtedly though, the wars will never end because humans are involved.

Religion, unfortunately, makes a wonderful excuse, when you interpret the proper holy book to fit your needs. I don't think any book can be holy...they are, after all, all written by man, and man is influenced by his times and his enviroment, and his own personal experience. Man is too biased, in other words, to write a holy book...

Religion is a way of escaping those things that we cannot change. Religion is what drugs are for addicts, food is for obeise individuals, etc.etc.
It may be a more respectable way to go about life according to our set of morals, but really think about it. We use religion to give us hope. To anwser those questions that we cannot anwser ourselves.
Religion is all that people whom choose to be spiritual have. It is their lifeline, if they don't have full faith in it, it does them no good. This faith is their full, their only truth, worth fighting for.

The world isn't fighting in the name of religion, the politicians would like us to believe this, for their benefit. Politicians manipulate when it suits them personally. It's got nothing to do with religion, its to do with power.

Some of it is caused by religious fervor, but don't be fooled. Organizations like "Hezbollah" (party of god), are not fighting because of their religion, Hezbollah fights Israel because of what Israel did to it in Lebanon, now and in 1982.
