It has something to do with how their body processes protein or certain enzymes. When it's very bad b/c of diet they can have a strong fish smell. If they watch their diet they can smell less fish like, but more like trash. Someone close to me has this. For so long we just thought it was her BO, but after researching we finally found out what it was and how to deal with it.

Anyone else have experience with this? Poor girl.

Yes, My 9 1/2 year old daughter has suffered from TMAU since she was born! She is getting to the age where she likes boys and this is very hard for her because when you are the one with this disorder you don't smell it, while others around you get a VERY strong whiff of fish when you are in the room, sweating alot makes it worse and it gets unbearable if she eats her favorite food Brocoli! We have been to the geneticist many times and cannot find in either side of the family where this started. She is the first in her blood line (guess it's got to start somewhere). Well if tou want a list of do's and don't's for this disorder feel free to email me and I can help you out! aliciap108@yahoo.com but I do recommend seeing a geneticist for a complete blood work up and establish wheather this is what you are dealing with or not.
I attached a pic of my angel! She is perfectly normal in every other way! She just has this very hard emotionally draining disorder!
Best of luck

I've heard of it. It's not a yeast infection--that's totally different, and it's not trichomoniasis--parasites, also different.

The syndrome has to do with not being able to process, hmmm, purines? I think it's purines, which are a type of amino acid. I don't know what the dietary restrictions are, but I'm guessing to cut down on certain types of protein. I wonder if there are any dietary supplements or meds for it?

It's not an infection--it's a digestive issue, but it's not contagious or infectious. It sounds pretty bad, but I think it can be managed to some extent. Has she seen a gastroenterologist or endocrinologist? Maybe start with a regular dr. and get a referral. I don't know if it has symptoms besides the odor--it could.

look up tricamonous. Could be spelled wrong. But its a fishy smell with no symptoms after about 2 weeks of having it. Its a parosite that lives in you. 5-10% of teenagers get it. Its an std and it has a smell that makes you want to vomit. Sad thing is the symptoms besides the smell go away after awhile but the parosite is still there.

Sometimes the fishy odor can be due to vaginitis which is caused by the candida fungus (yeast). As yeast can also cause a systemic syndrome, it is possible that the same odor could be caused all over.

www.hufa.org has some basic information on yeast syndromes.
