so corazon mia...should I assume the same of you? No I dont. There is a lot of ignorance in this world, some just show it more than others...in that case when someone does that to themselves we dont have to stereotype them, they do it on their own huh?

You're right on that! It's one of my pet peeves about posts. It's too easy to judge a person based on either their picture or their question and you really don't know what they are like do you?

I agree with Boopie, it's what our brains do, when you meet someone you ask, 'what's your name, where do you come from, what do you do?' - and from the answers you begin to build up a picture of what they're like, based on your experience and what you know.
The only thing we can do is be aware that when we are stereotyping and make sure that we always have open minds when interacting with others and don't just put them in a 'box' thinking we know them.
And the tone of your question - 'how can you do it to other people' - is kind of making the assumption that everyone on yahoo!answers is just ready to jump at the opportunity at summing people up & generalising them - and not everyone here is like that thankyou!!!

Huh? Well anyway, everyone stereotypes, everyone does unless their brain is malfunctioning. It is an unconscious automatic reaction the brain preforms so it can better process social information. We group everything in our world, people, items, music, everything. It sucks but it is true. I love it when people get stumped on my ethnic backround. It is usually the first thing a person asks when they meet me. They can't stand not being able to stereotype me and put labels on me according to my ethniticity.

I try not to stereotype anyone. I often "correct" others for making generalizations about religious groups, ethnic backgrounds, racial groups, etc. It's impossible to make a sound judgment of an entire group based on the behavior or knowledge of a select few individuals.

I don't like to rely on stereotypes because they are overly generic and EVERYONE is different. But sad truth is, people DO stereotype, whether they mean to or not. It's easier than getting to know the person.

Truckerzwife,
You know, there are lot's of things that people can do with themselves. There are sports, and shopping, and video games, and arts and crafts, and cooking, and inventing stuff, and novel writing, and coloring your hair, and listening to great teaching on the Bible, a vast assortment of things.
