My friend dropped off her dog at my apartment as she goes to New York for a week, but I noticed her dog (a chhuahua) is pooing alot and I caught him sniffing my chihuahua's poop. I noticed his teeth were brown and his breath smelled like ate a pound of poop. I tried sepearting both dogs, but I'm afraid the dog might get sick. Does the poop contain bad bacteria that will amke him sick?

In short: Dogs aren't human; they get into all kinds of nasty stuff. Eating feces will not harm a dog in any way. The only reason we (and myself included) try to keep our dogs from eating, well...crap, is because WE hate it.

My trick was to load up the fecal matter with hot sauce. A few tastes of that and the offending dog lost the taste for it...

There is the potential for your friend's dog to ingest parasites if there are any in your dog's feces (you won't see them)...and that could effect him. Other than that, there's no real health concern. Many dogs will eat feces...it's gross, but not really a health concern. I'd suggest trying to clean up after both dogs as soon as they are done pooping, and keep them separated when you're not around. Ideally they should be kept separate anyway if either has an unknown or questionable vaccination record...they could make each other sick.

Coprophagia (eating feces) is a normal, if not exactly pleasant behavior. Some vets believe that the animal has a vitamin deficiency, and some think that it's just boredom or an instinct left over from the days when dogs ran wild.

It's not likely to harm the dog. . .my German shepherd has done it since she was a puppy, and it's never made her sick. I've heard other people (including the vet that I take my dog to) say that their dogs do it, too, and that it's never hurt them.

One possibility is to lightly sprinkle the dog's food with garlic power. Most of them love the taste on their food, but not when it's been processed, so to speak.

normally do what the others recommend to do - give the poop a little flavor that the poochies will not like,... so it's alright to leave pooochie pooopage lying around your apartment for a few more days.

now if that still doesn't work, you might like to just try plugging the pooochie's pooopa-looopah's plumbing portal.

lmao,....

seriously, flavoring the poop is definitely the cure, hot sauce is the best thing, it won't kill or hurt the little buggers, but they will learn the lesson.

Good luck
Mahalo!!

p.s. next time you should get a cat, at least they do their pooping in private and never eat their own pooopage.

I own four dogs and one of them does this ame thing: It started a few months ago. She is constantly eating (is there any signs of this?) She eats her own poo as well as other dogs. Espescially my puppies. You should call the vet first thing! We ahvent found out whats wrong with our dog yet (Baby) but I will let you know..I am putting you on my watch list.

No. Your dog will be fine. Dogs eat feces all the time, though it is kind of gross. It might be a good idea if you clean up the poop though.
