I've always heard that English is the hardest language to learn.

Most likely English to Chinese.
Their whole concept of language is totally opposite from our Western English.

it makes no sense if i were familiar with chinese charters i'd say its fifty fifty they both seem hard with all the characrters.
would it not be more profitable to learn mandirin, contanese,or arabic three of the most widley spoken languges in Asia

I think that both find difficulty learning the opposite's tongue.The languages are so different.
