Aura is experienced by 10-20% of migraineurs. Aura is defined as focused symptoms that grow over 5-15 minutes and generally last about an hour. In most cases, the migraine headache follows the aura. However, the two events can happen at the same time, or the aura may develop after the headache starts. With aura, visual symptoms are most common and include the following:
Negative scotomata (blurred or absent areas in the vision field), tunnel vision, or even complete blindness
Positive visual problems, the most common of which consists of an absent arc or band of vision with a shimmering or glittering zigzag border: This is often combined with photopsias (a sensation of lights, sparks, or colors due to electrical or mechanical stimulation of the ocular [eye] system) or visual hallucinations that may take various shapes. This is a highly characteristic syndrome that always occurs before the headache phase of an attack and is specific to a diagnosis of classic migraine. It is called a "fortification spectrum" because the jagged edges of the hallucinated arc resemble a fortified town with bastions around it.
Photophobia
Photopsia (uniform flashes of light) or simple forms of visual hallucinations that occur commonly with positive visual phenomena

Yes I see a bright ziz zag line or spots. This is always BEFORE my migraine. If I take my Maxalt in time I can keep the migraine from coming on. But if I wake up with one, I'm out of luck. Then, I have total blindness in my right eye, right arm is numb, and I'm sick at my stomach.

Yup. It's called an aura. I see flashes of light, squiggly lines, my vision gets blurry, I get a big gray blind spot in my right eye, and one time, I got a blind spot that kept moving across my field of vision, left to right. Sometimes, my eyesight flickers, like I'm watching a crappy old movie in junior high or looking at a bad fluorescent light. Plus, I sometimes smell phantom smells--my auras smell like freesia or some kind of shampoo I used to use (though I don't think they make it anymore.)
If you have an aura, take your migraine meds IMMEDIATELY! It's the only warning sign you'll get! And the faster you treat a migraine, the better chance you have of stopping it or at least calming it down. I used to take Imitrex, but it was lame--now I pop ibuprofen and suck down a Coke or two (something caffeinated, but not coffee) at the first sign of an aura. It works pretty well. Don't bother with "migraine" Excedrin or whatever--it's the same stuff as in the regular bottle! Same formula! What you want is a mix of an NSAID painkiller and caffeine--you can try aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium. Acetaminophen does jack sh!t for my migraines.
But sometimes my migraines just floor me anyway. Nausea, stomach pain, splitting headache behind my eyes or in the back of my head, or maybe on one side. I have terrible sensitivity to light and smells--if I smell something that smells like my aura, I start to get a migraine (weird, right? But totally true.) I just have to lie down and try to will myself to sleep--I try to sleep through the worst of it. It sucks, sucks bad. So try to recognize your aura and respond to it as fast as possible--you can keep Excedrins with you or your meds (though I don't know why Excedrins have acetaminophen cuz that sh!t don't work. I think it's a waste.) Sorry you have them, too.

yep, i get them frequently when i get stressed out. i get tunnel vision and prepherial (sp) vision, it sucks cause it makes doing my work on the computer REALLY hard, i can't read and driving like that is not safe. I know when i get those symptoms i'm gonna get a really bad headache in the 15 min, so i take something for it. My doctor has prescribed me imitrex and something else, i don't like either of them. excedrin migraine works best for me, but each person is different. talk to your doc about medication options.

Yes, it sometimes does not allow me to see the full picture.
But in my case, it cames when migraine is also powered by stress, a lot of it...
Try to get 10 minutes of quite time, total relax and even a cup of coffee, it helps me..
