Panosteoitis (Pano) is a self limiting problem. It is an inflammation of the long bones and affects growing puppies usually between 4 + 8 months old. It most usually starts with a slight limp in one leg then migrates to another, When Pano is active it can be diagnosed with x-rays.A vet will prescribe antiinflammatories to help.
Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) also affects puppies from 4 - 8 months old.The puppy has very painful inflammation of the joints in the front legs. They are very lethargic and usually run a fever. Some times the pain is so bad it causes the puppy to scream and to not be able to stand.Diagnosis is usually made by x-ray and by symptoms.HOD is a more serious issue then Pano, Many puppies recover from HOD only to relapse within 21 days. HOD is usually caused by a food with to high a protein level. It can also be caused by insufficient vitamin C,large/giant breed puppies being given vit D and calcium supplements or giant breeds being fed any puppy food. On occassion some pups don't recover from HOD but this isn't the norm.

Both are painful conditions of the bones associated with nutrition in large breed puppies.
Pano can be self correcting and is thought to be genetic as well.
HOD is completely nutrition related and is thought to be caused by high levels of fat and protein in a large breed's diet. That's why it is not recommended to give Great Danes and other XL breeds puppy food. HOD also requires extensive vet care when it occurs.
500MG of Vitamin C a day up to 1000 ( in older pups ) can help prevent HOD.
